In London on June 10 Mr. Gladstone condemned the Unionists for breaking their election pledge in the House of Commons. He warned voters that at the next election the people would reward such treachery, noting this is the strongest abstention from honoring pledges in his fifteen Parliaments.
In Rome on June 10, during a censure debate in the Chamber of Deputies the condemned consul Signor Cavaletto defended Italy’s alliance with Germany and Austria. He warned of a Slav Adriatic and urged confidence in the government. Prime Minister Crispi argued the treaty preserves world peace and Italy would gain when nationality questions arise. Confidence was won by a large majority.

Through the Welland Canal moved 169664 tons of grain in transit from US ports to the US with no refund and 160358 tons from ports west of Port Colborne through the Welland.
