In Dalton Georgia this morning State Senator E Fields was shot and killed by his stepson Tay Taylor who says he acted after an attempt to discipline him. Taylor was arrested and taken to jail while Fields' wife lies consoled by grief.
Over 600 delegates from Ontario and Quebec attended the anti Jesuit convention in Toronto. Principal Caven chaired with speeches by Rev Charles Duff Major Bond Dr Davidson Colonel O Brien and James Sutherland. Resolutions condemned the Jesuit estates act and urged disallowance. An evening public meeting followed adjournment.
Ottawa editorial argues that removing the tax only on spruce piling logs destined for the American market is inadequate. It says the government should repeal the export duty entirely and notes that lifting the duty for piles will not deter American lumbermen from pressing Congress to raise the duty on Canadian sawn lumber to five dollars per thousand feet.
Freshman mass meeting adopts a constitution to govern Harvard Yale freshman athletics. Ratification by Yale could resolve baseball and football match issues over team membership and game dates and venues. Miners rallied as a body guard and the crowd filled the town with flags and a triumphal arch.
Berlin report denies delay by Secretary Blaine in signing the Samoa treaty amid indemnity questions. Conference to reconvene Thursday. A Morning Post Berlin correspondent says no serious Washington differences remain on the treaty and U S Senate ratification is expected. principal principles are settled and Americans are satisfied.
The Class Day exercises at Vassar College honored Miss Edith Green of Chicago as class president and Miss Louisa Bouknight Poppenheim of Charleston as marshal. Orator Miss Caroline B Weeks of Poughkeepsie and historian Miss Annie T Nettleton of Stockbridge with prophet Miss Lucy A Ferrill of Columbus. A prom endade concert followed. The annual trustees meeting elected three new trustees Professor Albert S Bickmore of New York Allen W Evarts of New York and Rev Nathan B Wood of Brooklyn, and a committee was named for a quarter centennial celebration in 1890 during Commencement Week.
Twenty five laborers on the Newport Rhode Island street railway went on strike for two dollars daily an increase of twenty six cents. Fifty replacement workers were telegraphed to take their places and the project continued to progress without interruption.
Johnstown begins a systematic cleanup as Adjutant-General Hastings takes charge. About 100000 will be paid to workers tomorrow, with 200 men to start and more added. The aim is to clear debris, restore water flow, and run relief via district, post, and quartermaster commissaries.
Subscriptions total 118493 54 dollars with 983 99 added yesterday acknowledged by Kidder Peabody Co. Donations of garments bedding and other items pour in for Pennsylvania sufferers. A violent storm in New York and Brooklyn caused a building under construction to collapse, burying six workers with two killed and others badly injured. Lightning struck St James Cathedral, causing interior damage and a large repair estimate. Other damage included a wall collapse at St Mary’s Star of the Sea and a shattered street tree in Manhattan. Nearby incidents reported in New Jersey and New Hampshire.
Army orders list Col E F Townshend to inspect Dakota National Guard encampment at Watertown June 24. Capt M Dougal granted indefinite leave. Capt Roe mer two months and five days’ leave. Lt Curtis retired relieved from Kenyon Academy June 18. Naval orders include Lt Cdr George B Wivington to Norfolk Navy Yard July 2 and Lt Wadham returned to duty. Naval Cadet Bristol ordered to coast survey.
Three men jumped from a freight train near Suter Pennsylvania on the Baltimore and Ohio line. Joseph Barker and an unknown man were killed while Isaac Illiams was fatally injured. The trio, all intoxicated, were attempting to steal a ride from Connellsville.

In New York June 11 Henry Clews notes that W E Gladstone sent acknowledgment and a second letter disputing Clews’s portrayal of the Palmerston cabinet. Gladstone, stating no fault in cabinet actions on recognizing the Southern States, asserts no misrepresentation and mentions an earlier explanation to the American government and a reply from Mr Hamilton Fish.
June 11 Berkeley reports arrangements between agents and the arbitrator ended the strike. The arbitrator had power to act, and the strike will be declared off with workers returning to their jobs tomorrow.
