Ottawa June 9 American fugitives in Canada fear retroactive Weldon extradition law says leading lawyers Parliament did not declare nonretroactive. Boondlers including John C Eno vow to test in empire's high court. About 200 fugitives may face odd position if courts back the opinion.

Concorp June 9 George Raymond of Boston painter camping at Fairhaven Bay with friend Clarence Osgood capsized boat in Sudbury River this morning. He was a good swimmer but cramps caused his drowning. Body recovered this afternoon. He was 30, single. Parents live at Westminster.
A man about 40 was found asleep across the railroad tracks just beyond Reading depot. The Boston to Melrose ticket in his pocket led authorities to identify him as a Melrose highway department worker who had been in town for the past few days. The last Boston Reading train struck him, causing instant death with severe injuries. Chief McLaughlin of Melrose confirmed the identification this afternoon.
On June 9 Johnstown continued debris clearance with 58 more bodies recovered. The death toll is estimated between 3500 and 4000, while Governor Beaver outlined plans to fund and direct relief, and coroner findings in Greensburg blamed the South Fork Reservoir dam for the flood.
Miss Walk and Miss Ely of the North Home for Friendless Children brought the Hoff man family of nine to Philadelphia after flood losses left both parents and oldest sister drowned. Miss Hinckley of the Children's Aid Society says many children await homes or reunions, with efforts to rejoin families and place orphans with Johnstown residents when possible. Maggie Brooks aids in locating relatives, while Western Pennsylvania Aid Society provides temporary and permanent homes. Mrs Alston found seventeen adults and children in Kernville and will send them to Pittsburg until parents secure housing.
Boston’s relief fund for Johnstown flood victims crosses 100000 with 11569 42 raised on Saturday. Mayor Hart reports Philadelphia mayor’s pledge of 50000 to be drawn when needed. Globe Theatre benefit, Trinity Church collections, and Brooks last sermon support the relief effort. Home for Little Wanderers offers to shelter 25 orphans. Rome June 9 The Bruno statue was unveiled with a massive public ceremony drawing about thirty thousand people including students and regional deputations. The event featured a covered statue reveal, cheers, and speeches by Deputy Bovier praising free thought. The Vatican closed for two days as the Pope vows expiation and prayer amid widespread priestly departures and 400 telegrams of protest.
In Buffalo region June 9 attorney Charles S. Hatch for William Kemmler known as John Hart the wife killer sentenced to die by electric chair has filed notice of appeal to the Court of Appeals. The appeal raises constitutional questions about the method of punishment and is expected to become a landmark criminal case. A writ of habeas corpus will be sought immediately and likely heard first.
At about 1 45 yesterday afternoon Sergeant Ritter and a squad raided 41 Howard street, arresting ten Chinamen for being present. Officers Rosatto and Flynn also arrested six Italians for gaming on Sunday at 19 Harris street.
Paris June 9 The Chamber of Deputies hears a sharp clash over education funding as Count Albert de Mun attacks ex-Premier Ferry and accuses him of tyranny. Minister Fallières urges public verdict to justify policy while Clemenceau endorses firm action against the church to enforce laws.
Washington June 9 1889 military orders end Sunday inspections in the army with Sunday morning checks limited to dress and appearance. More complete under arms inspection moved to Saturday as per General Order 950 AR 1889 signed by Brigadier General Harrison and Adjutant J C Ketton.
Wash Hindton reports forecast through Monday evening. Rain expected for New England and eastern New York, with fair skies to start on Long Island Sound. Cooler temperatures and southwest winds accompany the likely rain.

He refused to name the presiding officer, was taken into custody, then signaled willingness to testify revealing the officer as William H Joyce. Peter McGeehan followed with remarks about Cronin accusing him of murder and a note ordering him out of the state. He claimed presence at Pullman the night Cronin died and was also taken into custody after testimony.
Ex Senator D. M. Sabin files for divorce in Washington county district court citing habitual drunkenness. Summons served on Mrs. Sabin in Flushing. complaint not yet filed. Wife previously an invalid and morphine addict, later using liquor. Mrs Sabin, once socialite hosting weekly receptions in Washington. No children of their own.
Rain spoiled the ceremony at West Port New York as the graduating class received officer swords from Uncle Sam. Cadet Winslow of Massachusetts led the first class, with Cadet Barrios last and Cadet Young colored ranked 46th. The mortar pottery drill occurred in the morning and the plan awaited for all first class graduates, led by Winslow.
