Steel barges rival schooners for Boston coal trade
Two whaleback coal barges from the Great Lakes, towed by the Bayport, arrive in East Boston for repairs. Owned by Boutelle Steel Barge Co and teamed with the lake steamer Bayport, they join the Bay View towing Badger and Bavaria en route to Boston. The new pigs, with the steamer, carry 2200 to 2600 tons and may outpace schooners to unloading berths.
