In Chelsea near Everett avenue and Walnut street shortly after 6 last night Philip A. Smith, 25, was shot in the abdomen and gravely wounded. Fred J. Lessard, a strike breaker from the C. F. Kelly Shoe Company, was chased and seized by a mob before being captured as lawmen charged him with firing the shot. Lessard's account says Smith attacked him before a hostile crowd, prompting Lessard to fire between his legs. Smith had not worked at the plant but sided with strikers. Lessard’s Somersworth, New Hampshire home and upcoming wedding are noted.
