Bay State Senator urged Lodge as best fit for peace terms at the conference. Progressives proposed the plan and Republicans welcomed it, signaling early agreement. The peace parleys adjourned with claims of progress and GOP support for a Lodge settlement.
June 8 report says the Russian assault against Austria has grown formidable with advances of over 20 miles in some areas. Lutsk in Volhynia falls, giving Russia a strong position as over 11,000 prisoners are captured in Lutsk’s fall, bringing total weekly losses to more than 51,000.
After seizing Lutsk the Russian forces push toward the west across the Ikna and Styr rivers. They begin actions near Kovel between Lutsk and Brest Litovsk and near Rovno south of the fortress. In Galicia they attack Austro Hungarians along the Stripa river and take prisoners and equipment.
The cruiser Hampshire sank in deep water two miles from land between Marwick Head and the Brough of Birsay on the Orkney Islands coast. The incident occurred on June 9 and is reported from Aberdeen Scotland.
