The report shows Hughes trailing on the second ballot with 328 votes and 1-2 on the first. Weeks remains strong with 105 first ballot votes and 79 on second. Root accumulates 103 on first and 98 1-2 on second while Roosevelt climbs from 65 to 81. The convention adjournment hints Hughes would have won on a third ballot.
The Russians press the offensive from the Pripet River to the Roumanian frontier along about 250 miles. They crossed the Stripa River in Galicia and reached the Zlota Lip a River. Petrograd reports 1,143 officers and more than 64,700 men captured since the drive began.

Yale varsity eight wins over Harvard in a four mile downstream row in 20 minutes 46 seconds at Gales Ferry Conn. The Yale crew, paced by freshmen for two miles, raised its stroke to 30 late, finishing strong aboard the Whileaway. Harvard clocked 20 minutes 56 seconds.
The Bay and Vincent Club reports that on February 1 Mr Frothingham wed Mrs S Reed Anthony, who is the mother of Mrs Weyburn, in a Beverly Farms ceremony.
Randolph Frothingham, classmate of Lyon Weyburn at Yale and Harvard Law School, and his roommate until recently at 137 Peterboro Street, Back Bay, is on a honeymoon with Weyburn’s mother in law.
Forecast for Boston and vicinity calls for Saturday with occasional showers. Sunday should be generally fair and warmer with moderate southerly to easterly winds.
Eight men, trapped by a 50 mile gale and heavy fog, were rescued after two schooners ran ashore near Newburyport. The crew endured mountainous waves and a frightful downpour before safety.
Three men were taken from the two masted schooner Josie and five from the Virginian after both ships went aground near Plum Island and Salisbury Beach. Captains Mitchell and Robinson led crews saved by Knobbs Life Saving Station and local volunteers, with the Josie a total loss and the Virginian damaged. The Virginian sailed from Clementsport to Lynn with cord wood. the Josie carried 545000 lathes from Machiasport to New York.
In Chicago on June 9 Senator Weeks falls from second place after an open fight with Governor McCall. Weeks, who led New England candidates on the first ballot with 41 votes, loses status as the front runner as McCall shifts the race and Weeks becomes an also ran.
The feud between the Governor and the junior Senator escalates as the Governor, unhappy with a Bay State delegation poll he reviewed, calls for the public roll call of his delegation when Massachusetts votes on the second ballot.
Roosevelt will support Root for the Presidency. George W. Perkins says Colonel Roosevelt will not back Hughes or any other favorite son, insisting Root is the only viable winner.
Chicago June 9 Justice Charles Evans Hughes stood 166 votes from the GOP presidential nomination after two ballots as Roosevelt gained 81 on the second tally and 65 on the first. Senator Penrose proposed adjournment while Knox backed Brumbaugh followers and Perry blocked Roosevelt’s nomination with a delayed second ballot strategy.
An exhausted Hughes forces attempt to prolong balloting fails as the convention grows tired and hungry and refuses to stay longer.
The peace conference of the Republican and Progressive conventions adjourned shortly before 2 a.m. until 9 a.m. without a definite agreement.
Chicago June 10 The last stand of the allies against the Hughes forces threatening to sweep the Republican convention today has been organized as opposition mobilizes to block Hughes’s bid.
Colonel Roosevelt assumed direct control of the Progressive convention by long distance telephone at the end of the Republican gathering. He was pleased with the second ballot outcome and believed Hughes reached peak strength then, boosting his nomination chances.
George W. Perkins, a Moose peace maker, told Progressive delegates that talks with the Republican committee convene immediately and that outcomes are uncertain. He added that if negotiations fail tonight or tomorrow, they will have done all in their power in the right direction.
John P. Larkin died today after a brief illness in Harwich. He was among the town’s oldest residents and father of J Richard Larkin an attorney of Boston.
