Berlin claims Fort Vaux near Verdun fell to German forces after weeks of heavy French defense. German troops took a large number of guns machine guns and mine throwers from the fortress and its garrison surrendered.
Paris reports Fort Vaux remained in French hands as bombardment blocked communications. The Verdun fortress, second of several outer defences to fall to Germans, follows Fort Douaumont captured in the campaign’s early days.
Worcester June 7 a police patrol chased Mrs Lara Mawthorne of Lynn through the city after a report she had kidnapped a child at 83 Piedmont Street. She and a lawyer showed custody papers from Lynn courts and were allowed to take the child and depart.
Investigators announced that Harry A. Jones assistant cashier at Stoneham National Bank is suspected in a theft nearing $50,000. The amount could exceed that figure as examiners conclude their day of inquiry into the bank's affairs.
Jones, a local banker embezzler, confessed to stealing at least $41,600 from the bank where he earned $18 a week. Despite living in luxury aided by his wife, daughter of a late Woburn contractor, he was jailed in East Cambridge. He held civic roles, including financial secretary of Odd Fellows and five years on Woburn’s Board of Aldermen. Continued on page 14-Fourth Col.
Plymouth on June 7 reports a sensational divorce case where Mrs Martha Adelaide Sumner sues Earl A M Sumner, owner of Brant Rock House, claiming fear of vitriol threats and a belated Bermuda wedding confession. Sumner seeks to have the marriage declared void to meet the action.
The marriage of Earl A M Sumner and Martha A Sumner occurred in Portland Maine on May 12 1915 during the alleged disability period after divorce proceedings in which both were principals.
Ottawa June 7 A supplementary cable list to the minister of militia reports Canadian officers killed at Sanctuary Wood rising to 240 The latest roll adds 60 names including A A Wanklin lieutenant of the Princess Pats and son of Fr I Wanklin Montreal a director of the Canadian Pacific Railway Captain Niven of London Ont the only surviving original officer of the Princess Pats is reported wounded.
A fifth clash between State Auditor Alonzo B. Cook and his brother Washington Cook on Somerset Street near the City Club ended when friends separated them. Washington, 44, landed more blows than his 50 year old brother. The younger claimed the fight settled a debt, while the elder left his office without commenting.
