A powerful dawn earthquake near Colima on the Pacific coast caused nearly 1000 deaths and widespread destruction across towns and agricultural areas. Telegrams arriving in Mexico City confirm the quake centered near Colima, west of Mexico City, with extensive property loss reported.
In San Francisco on a June day Dr. C Frederick Kohl a physician and capitalist was shot and fatally wounded by Adele Verge a French maid recently employed by his wife. The shooting occurred in the Grant building corridor where Superior courts are housed as Kohl went there as a witness in Verge's suit against him and Frank A Miller a Riverside hotel manager for malicious persecution.
Miss Verge, after a dispute with a chauffeur and discharge from Mrs. Kohl's service, shot Dr. Kohl as he left an elevator at the Superior Court. The bullet struck below the heart. doctors at Central Emergency Hospital described his condition as critical. Kohl, a wealthy San Francisco figure with club memberships, forgave the assailant.
The Colima volcano remains highly active delivering lava flows and explosions that have driven residents from valleys. Major destruction across Tonalita San Andres Tonila San Gabriel and Tuxpau with an estimated death toll around 600 in Colima state and over 100 in Guadalajara amid widespread fires and structural collapse. The cathedral in Guadalajara was heavily damaged as residents sought safety in the wake of the quake and eruption.
In Alfred Maine on June 8 testimony showed Miss Margaret Noble urged immediate cremation of Mrs Ole Bull and Mrs Olea Bull Vaughan supported delaying for a tomb. Executor Joseph G Thorp testified the plan aimed to ease sorrow. cremation occurred Jan 20 two days after death. Mrs Bull had requested cremation in her will.
Miss Siri Swanander testified that after Miss Noble started administering the medicine to Mrs Bull during her last illness, Mrs Bull began to show impairment and could not complete her utterances before breaking off. The testimony continues on the next page.
The Boston Consolidated Gas Company may buy the Masonic Temple at Tremont and Boylston Streets and either remodel the present structure or build a new office on the site. Negotiations focus on price with offers of 1,250,000 from the gas company and 1,500,000 from the trustees. President J. L. Richards is away, delaying final decision.
Miss Helen Whittier Andrus daughter of Congressman John S. Andrus married Henry H. Hobbs of Springfield Massachusetts in St George Church New York after shopping. Hobbs a Yale left tackle 1908 1909 and coach for Amherst football 1912. They plan to sail from Boston to Naples after the wedding.
Miss Christine Shaw a 26 year old Orono High School teacher was shot in the head after a dance at Orono town hall. A mob pursued T. S. Linn a Chinese government student at the University of Maine whom police moved to Bangor for interrogation on the shooting.
James Gordon Gilky a Harvard junior wins the Lloyd McKim Garrison prize of 100 dollars and a silver medal for the best poem on a yearly subject Harvard monthly prints Boston as Seen from the Harvard Bridge The prize founded by the class of 1888 honors Lloyd McKim Garrison and is awarded by the English department committee.
A reflective poem set on the Harvard Bridge praising Boston landmarks and urging civic virtue. It recalls colonial history and calls for justice, shared wealth, and national duty as the city glows at dusk. The verse closes with the author’s name.
W. E. D. Stokes case stalls as the hotel owner lies seriously wounded at Roosevelt Hospital after being shot by two young women. Lillian Graham and Ethel Conrad are charged with attempting to murder and held without bail for a Monday hearing.
Both girls waived examination and offered only a statement via their lawyer claiming self defense after Stokes forced entry to seize letters from their flat. The defense cites breach of promise details as part of the case against Stokes.
American League games list St Louis Detroit Washington Boston New York Philadelphia Cleveland and Chicago led by Boston’s Big shakeup in Red Sox infield noted. National League results show St Louis New York Philadelphia Chicago Pittsburgh and others with college races and crews also mentioned. Papke defeats Sullivan in nine rounds. Yale crew and city regatta updates noted amid postponement.
The street railways committee backed the new subway bill and a 50 year West End lease to the Boston Elevated at 7 percent rent in an informal vote. A sub committee urges adoption while four of fifteen committee members oppose the bill. A formal vote will move to the joint metropolitan affairs and street railways panel for a 30 member poll before Legislature review. Senators Hibbard of Lowell and representatives Ellis, Hardy, and Henebery oppose, with others expected to join.
The committee on street railways and the committee on metropolitan affairs met to discuss the subway and lease bill but did not reach a decision. Both panels adjourned without a verdict on their probable action.
Senator Joseph Lomasney denounces the vetoes and hypocrisy of Governor while criticizing the 54 hour bill. The Senate refused to pass the teachers measure by a single vote and a reconsideration is planned.
Senator Joseph P. Lomasney unleashed a bitter attack on Governor Foss as the Senate debated passing the teachers' salary bill over the governor. The governor’s veto was sustained by a 14 to 25 vote, leaving the measure short of the required two thirds. efforts to secure a redefinition or reconsideration were noted.
Senator Lomasney virulently assails the Democratic Governor in a historic blow by a party member. Packed galleries hear the excoriation as Boston school marms are deployed and President Treadway twice orders him to stop impugning the Governor’s motives.
