Police probing the Melrose murder of seven year old Loretta Wakelin focused on Harold Mead and Harold Shaw. Mead, described as weak minded, gave no new details beyond his confession while near the crime scene at 7 15 and 11 that morning. He complained his head was not working right.
Mead declares Shaw was with him during the brutal crime but claims Shaw did not act. Shaw persists in branding Mead a liar and a crazy fool and denies either was in Melrose when the child was murdered.
Sadie Thornton, 16, of 102 Camden Street Roxbury, stepped on a cat under a lit gas stove while preparing dinner. The fall ignited her dress and she suffered serious arm and body burns. She was placed on the dangerous list at City Hospital.

Pasquale Lorosso of 18 Hill Street died after shielding Mrs. Angela Armento of 275 Shrewsbury Street from Giuseppi Corso who, in a jealousy attack, fired six shots from an automatic pistol and fled. Armento operated a lodging house. Corso was a boarder.
Lorosso, 22, visiting Mrs Armento with companions, argued with her hostess after returning from New Haven railroad yards. He retrieved a pistol from his room and fired, wounding Lorosso as he shielded the woman. three shots hit him, one in the leg, one in the body, and a fatal shot to the head, others ricocheting to floor, wall, and ceiling.

Henry R Lane driving a car that overturned between Salisbury Beach and Haverhill. Mrs Henry R Lane cut and bruised. Annie Regal of East Boston stepped into path of a motorcycle at Revere Beach. Dulinda Larves of East Boston Revere Beach was mentioned.
In Haverhill tonight three people were injured in a motor vehicle overturn on the State highway between Salisbury Beach and Haverhill. Catherine Donovan of Monmouth Street Lawrence was trapped under the car and sustained internal injuries. She was taken to Hale Hospital in serious condition.
Henry R. Lane and his wife of 185 Abbott Street Lawrence suffered cuts and bruises when their automobile overturned near Webster's turnout on the way home from Salisbury Beach. A sister of Miss Donovan, Elizabeth, escaped injury. The occupants were pitched into the roadway.
Despatches to Lloyds report the sinking of the armed free British steamships Dewsland and Salmonpool. The Salmonpool of 4905 gross tons sailed from Adelaide on March 19 and arrived at Las Palmas May 11. The Dewsland was a vessel of 1983 tons.
Emperor William has consented to act as godfather to the son born on May 30 to Frau Bertha Krupp von Bohlen und Halbach, principal owner of the Krupp works. The announcement comes via London from Berlin dated June 3.
A power boat struck a submerged obstruction near East Taunton and overturned, resulting in the drowning of Lewis Canary of Brockton and the rescue of three others, Raymond Kenney Jeremiah Dorgan and George Baker, all Brockton residents, near Taunton River.
The men returning from East Taunton to Middleboro camping trip near shore saw their boat overturn trapping Kenney who could not swim and clung to the hull until Dorgan rescued him. Baker swam to shore while Canary vanished. Police continued river searches with plans to resume in the morning.
Jeremiah Carroll told Boston Gaelic School members in their hall that concessions to the Irish were won by threats of force. He argued Ireland has never gained through moral suasion and credited Irish patriots in Dublin and across the country for hastening attention to the Irish question in a week.
Chicago June 4 Colonel Roosevelt told supporters by telephone he will not back Hughes unless Hughes clearly declares his position. He said he has picked Taft as the gold brick and will not choose another.
Chicago June 4 Delegates at the Republican convention debated whether to place Colonel Roosevelt’s name in nomination in the standard way or to cast ballots without a formal nomination to stir sentiment. Roosevelt managers discussed the issue at their conference, fearing a spokesman might have to pledge support for the convention’s action regardless of outcome.
Chicago reporters say Justice Hughes could win both Republican and Progressive nominations if he issues a clear public statement on preparedness national service anti hyphenization and social justice. Roosevelt urged Hughes by phone to publish his views or face a split GOP.

Captain Herbert Jay Hirshinger of the US Marine Corps was shot and killed during the Puerto Plata landing in Santo Domingo on May 31. He commanded the detachment from the battleship Rhode Island and died the next day from a head wound, with news reaching the Navy Department today.
The Navy sent a telegram to Mrs. Hirshinger widow of Captain Hirshinger who with her daughter travels in Boston. He had been ordered to the West Indies after commanding the Rhode Island marine detachment. Marines sailed from Boston aboard the Salem to Santo Domingo and joined the Sacramento. Major Charles B. Hatch led 180 Marines deployed to Puerto Plata after the Puerto Plata robbery, protecting American interests through Santo Domingo.
Observers failed to honor fathers as yesterday was celebrated nationally as Fathers Day. The red roses expected in men's buttonholes were largely absent, contrasting with the usual display of white carnations on Mothers Day.
