Justice Charles E. Hughes addressed American flag symbolism at the National Cathedral School lawn in Washington. He urged unity and allegiance to America, signaling his first public stance since the pre convention campaign began and addressing expectations from Progressives and Republicans.

The German Emperor sent congratulatory messages to Grand Admirals Tirpitz and Koester after their fleet returned victorious from a heavy battle. He praised their work in weapons, organization, and tactical training that helped the fleet endure and perform in the North Sea engagement.
George Whiting head of D Whiting & Sons milk contractors died after a short illness at his Wilton New Hampshire summer home. He was born in Wilton and lived in Lowell and Somerville. He leaves a wife Mary Goddard a son James four brothers and a sister. Whiting was one of the Easts leading milk contractors.
Miss Mary C. Mellyn was elected assistant superintendent to succeed Walter S. Parker who retires at term end. Mellyn has directed practice and training for 10 years and will guide substitute teachers while continuing her current directing duties.
The Boston school board selects Miss Mellyn for the position, making her the second woman on the board alongside Mrs Eller Carlisle Ripley. Other members are Jeremiah E. Burke Augustine L. Rafter and Frank V. Thompson. The move surprised many after prior calls to abolish the board. Corcoran supported Miss Mellyn with Curtis and Scannell while Lee opposed.
Timothy Dowd of Roxbury was fatally struck at Longwood and Huntington avenues when an eastbound car driven by Alfred Adams hit him. Adams, arrested for manslaughter, claims Dowd stepped into the path. Dowd died at City Hospital. The car was owned by John Manning of a Roxbury garage.

Eddie Mack a Boston bookmaker and athletic bureau head was shot yesterday at Braves Field in front of about 3000 fans. He refuses to name the assailant who fled into the crowd. Some witnesses say Mack fired the pistol after a scuffle.
A bullet pierced Mack's left thigh during a third inning confrontation against the Chicago Cubs. He identified the shooter to police but refused to name him, saying he would handle the case privately. Doctors expect him to recover within a week or two as investigators press forward.
