Senate finance committee agreed on amendments to the war tax bill including exemption of popular price moving picture theatres from amusement taxes and a new federal license tax on automobile owners from 7.50 to 25 with reductions for cars used a year or more.
With work nearly done the committee adjourned to Monday to allow treasury experts to draft a legal shape for the bill. The measure may go to the Senate early next week. Senator Simmons and Senator Penrose will meet with publishers and post office officials about taxing publications instead of higher second class mail rates. The amendment would exempt theatres charging under 25 cents admission from a one cent tax per dime under the House plan. Penrose urged the move, calling moving picture houses the poor man's theatre. Joseph Wakelin and wife Sarah Ann Wakelin of Melrose faced arraignment in Malden District Court for first degree murder in the brutal killing of their seven year old daughter Loretta. Judge Thomas P. Riley continued the cases without a hearing.
Massachusetts National Guard regiments will open three recruit training camps next week. The Ninth at Framingham the Sixth at Concord and the Second at Springfield begin work today with six week courses. Participants will engage 36 to 42 hours weekly of drilling and war tactics plus evening lectures on squad company and regimental schools.
Governor McCall may order Massachusetts saloons closed on June 5 when men aged 21 to 31 must register under the new selective draft law. Boston Licensing Board has not acted. Cincinnati June 1 Henry Gowdy known as Hank Gowdy star catcher of the Boston Braves and 1914 world series hero enrolls in the National Guard of Ohio. He will report in Columbus for registration day duties amid government efforts to repress propaganda and ensure orderly mobilization.
