Melrose police and State police arrested Loretta Wakelin's parents at 1:05 AM on charges of murdering their seven year old daughter one year to the day after her body was found in a thicket near Swain's Pond. Wakelin is held without bonds. his wife faces a $10,000 bail.
Federal officials in Columbus Ohio act decisively against alleged anti draft plotters aiming to spread unpatriotic propaganda. The case centers on interference with listing slated for June 9 and signals a hard line against dissent in wartime.
The House rejected the censorship section of the espionage bill by 184 to 144. Senate opposition had already been strong and leaders do not expect new administration efforts to enact wartime newspaper censorship soon.
President Wilson joined Liberty Loan participants by subscribing for a $10,000 bond and urging others to contribute. The message notes a $1 weekly payment buys a bond and compares it to the price of a dozen cigars, with banks in Boston offering to process weekly payments toward a $50 bond.

Rizov states he approached Russian ministers at Stockholm and Christiania in January with a proposal for an honorable peace between Russia and its foes but was rebuffed.
The Jamaica Plain telephone exchange honored three workers headed for service in France with a send-off. Wire Chief Arthur Florton of West Roxbury senior Test Man Elmer Walster of Roxbury and Wire Chief James Fitzgerald of Jamaica Plain received monogrammed toilet kits as gifts before departing on June 6 with the Signal Corps.
A missing child identified as "Tootie" from Ripley School near Swain's Pond prompted a statewide search led by Mayor Adams. Parents last saw her alive after she was sent home for forgetting a book. Multiple arrests failed to prove guilt. a boy confessed but was exonerated by later inquiries. Local boy John Higgins aided the investigation.

Plattsburg New York May 31 320 New York National Guard members arrived boosting the officers training camp to about 6000. The guardsmen form two new companies Sixteenth and Seventeenth to complete the course begun by earlier arrivals. Lynde Selden a New York banker was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the cavalry reserve. The Pierce bill closes 15 saloons within a quarter mile of the post at midnight ending their business.
Mrs. Colin W. Mac Donald told the Dorchester suffragists gathering last night that wealthy women attending food conservation and economics meetings are driving up prices for the poor. The meeting was hosted by Mrs. Thomas F. McLaughlin at 96 Olney Street.

In the House a motion to recommit the espionage bill with censorship removed drew 37 Democratic and Republican votes for, while 11 Republicans opposed the caucus. Alvan T. Fuller of Massachusetts was among the 11 against censorship. Conferees will report to Senate tomorrow. the bill, stripped of censorship, may reach both chambers within days and be accepted. The Senate earlier defeated the censorship section 48 to 31.
Washington May 81. The steamboat inspection service plans to modify licensing rules to supply officers for ships in the merchant fleet planned by the Shipping Board. The executive committee of the Board of Supervising Steamboat Inspectors will meet Monday to discuss new rules.

Vice-President Joseph G. Stearns of Old Colony Trust Company collapsed on Hereford Street in Boston’s Back Bay shortly after 6 PM. The 68-year-old banker was en route to his Marlboro Street home when he fell near 40 Hereford Street. Two physicians tried to revive him then transported him to City Hospital where he was pronounced dead. The body was later identified at Southmoratorium.
President Wilson has sent a confidential document to the Russian government outlining U S war aims including no annexations and no indemnities. It will be published only after Ambassador Francis presents it in Petrograd and then in Washington.
