American units push nearly two miles, wrest Sergy from German forces after close quarters combat. Prussian Guards and Bavarians struggle to hold the line, while German rear guards are overwhelmed.
President Wilson is expected to involve himself in the General Electric Company strike today. Officials in Lynn indicated that Washington sought to influence the dispute as of yesterday afternoon. Continued on Page S-Fourth Col.
AP reports German forces near the Soissons Rheims salient are poised to end their retreat and launch a frontal assault. Rear-guard actions wind down as violent counter offensives unfold along the battle front, slowing Allied gains.
Allies including the Americans push forward amid intense combat as German reserves and fresh divisions stiffen the retreat. The gains are smaller than earlier advances as forces regroup and push toward a continued push across the front.
Large relief showers cooled temperatures by 13 degrees in New England cities and towns. While many welcomed the clouds and rain, farmers suffered as the deluge toppled crops in numerous locations. Continued on Page 14 Seventh Col.
American forces advancing two miles north of Sergy in the Soissons Rheims salient report a decisive breakout. They shattered German divisions at Sergy and held the village against counter attacks while pushing toward Nesles as heavy artillery and machine guns pounded the frontline.
On July 30 American troops from the Midwest and Northeast with the Allied forces advanced their line amid a deadly barrage on the Aisne Marne front. The attack sharpened the apex of the long allied front as night fell.
