Terrific shelling rages as Germans mass heavy guns to clear a path for Crown Prince against French and American forces. The all day bombardment signals a climactic attempt to unite German forces for a big move on a salient backed by the Vesle River front.
General Degoutte praised progress on the Aisne Marne front as American troops and the Allied army pressed the Germans beyond their positions. He expressed satisfaction with current advances and hope for continued success against German forces.
Five indictments charging grand larceny were returned against broker George Graham Rice in New York. He was held on $7500 bail for a preliminary hearing. Indictments allege money sent for securities purchases was diverted to other purposes.

Beverly July 31 Francis E Stanley treasurer and director of the Stanley Motor Carriage Company of Watertown whose home was in New Orleans was killed when his automobile ran away and crashed into a house in the Watertown area authorities said. Stanley known for Stanleys motor car division was returning from a meeting when the accident occurred in a residential street. The company and local officials began an inquiry into the vehicle incident and its circumstances.

New York July 31 District Attorney Swann ordered Miss Ethel Langdon Drake to hand over $14,000 raised for equipping 25 French army ambulances and to stop her war charity activities in America. Drake had recently been in Boston and avoided U S deputies by leaving Copley Plaza.
Miss Virginia K Chandler captain of the Drake Section Sanitaire which was to operate 25 ambulances announced a training camp of 19 young women at Bayside Long Island under her command had been disbanded and she resigned her commission District Attorney Swann noted the section sanitaire had no ambulances though an advert claimed 25 were given to France and 1000 drivers were sought details of payments from 75 to 175 dollars were reported continued on page 5 fifth column
