Riot police brace Chicago districts as rioting spreads. thousands of soldiers armed with riot guns stand by to quell unrest in a tense, escalating crisis across the city as authorities move to restore order and protect civilians.
Camp Devens reports ex lieutenant Samuel H. Stone of the Yankee Division began a 10 year prison term at Fort Leavenworth Kansas for desertion under fire. Convicted by court martial at Eccomoy France in January he was found guilty of abandoning night patrols near No Man s Land and deserting his platoon during actions at Chateau Thierry St Mihiel and Verdun.
In Chicago on July 29 a mob of whites confronted Provident Hospital, an institution for Negroes. One Black person was reportedly hurt, two policemen and about six others sustained injuries as the crowd surrounded the building amid escalating threats to torch homes in white sections.
A fragmented 1915 era snippet notes England and France ready for war but urging peace, Russian retreat on both banks of the Bug, and a New York Harbor munitions explosion for the Allies. It recalls a year ago Americans and French losing and regaining Clerges and Beugneux as U.S. and British draft treaty took effect.
New York reports dozens of brutal abuses of American soldiers in French prison camps, described as torture and traced to high army officers by witnesses before a congressional sub committee probing the A. E. F. disciplinary system.
Washington July 29 The House adopted a resolution urging Secretary Baker to place on sale without delay surplus food products held by the War Department valued at 120 000 000 After rejecting a Democratic substitute the House approved an amendment directing distribution through the parcel post The vote was 266 to 4 final and the ruling on the amendment was overruled by the war committee chairman.
The 1917 German plan sought Liege control and Belgian economic union as leverage, with Liege held provisionally for security. Hindenburg opposed ceding Liege and refused indemnities or signaling any peace terms to the Allies, while Chancellor Michaelis drafted the peace proposal.

In Webster First District Court Edgar Walden of Thompson Road was fined $5 for assaulting Mrs Stannis Sprelwicz and locking her in a box stall on a posted farm near Webster Lake. The incident began when Sprelwicz and her sister picked blueberries on Feno J Sinclair’s land. Walden demanded arrest and kept Sprelwicz confined until her husband intervened. Walden agreed to release her after a $2 payment, and he sought a trespass warrant but abandoned it on the judge’s advice.
In Weimar on July 29 the German National Assembly voted confidence in the government by a large majority. Earlier the assembly rejected a motion of lack of confidence from the Right by 243 to 53.
Before his conviction Stone says he was beaten insensible at least four times by privates in his platoon for cowardice. Twice he was threatened with death by men under him. Desertion is punishable by death. Soldiers in the American Expeditionary Forces guilty of lesser offences were sentenced to much harsher terms than Stone on numerous occasions. Seven children aged six weeks to ten years and their mother Mrs Tony Stravisar were found dead in their Kimberly residence near Athens County. Authorities say coal oil was sprinkled over the room and the mother likely killed herself and the children amid worry over separation.
George Stuart Harvey attorney and trustee of the Revere House charged Fire Commissioner Murphy that certain firefighters from the Bulfinch Street station looted the hotel after a late Monday fire. He says furniture including mattresses hat racks and an electric fan valued at several hundred dollars disappeared but were returned by firemen to the hotel by noon. The goods were later found in the fire house basement and Murphy is investigating.
The Hotel Continental on Essex Street changed hands yesterday. Charles Lavis, proprietor for 15 years, sold to a group of local men who plan to renovate the house and turn it into a prohibition hostelry.
Paris July 29 The Associated Press reports the Supreme Council granted Austria seven additional days to study the peace terms. August 6 will be the final day for Austrian representatives to submit inquiries, after today’s decision.

Forecast for Boston and vicinity calls for fair weather on Wednesday and Thursday with moderate temperatures and westerly winds. Across New England and eastern New York the outlook is similar with fair skies, moderate temperatures, and a lingering low Atlantic off the coast. Cooler conditions were noted Tuesday across the middle Atlantic and New England, with scattered showers in northern New England in the last 24 hours. Strong northwest winds near Sandy Hook to Hatteras accompany fair weather offshore.

The properties occupy prime oceanfront sites near Lexington and Hesperus Avenues with extensive layouts, four to nine rooms, and high occupancy history with Oceanside Hotel guests. Sale on Friday August nineteen nineteen at four PM. deposits of 1500 for The Gables and 1000 for The Fox Cottage required when struck off.
Geneva July 29 The Associated Press reports Alexander Garbai president of the Hungarian Soviet government shot himself in the Budapest assembly building after denouncing the Soviet and its supporters. He accused Bela Kun of steering the nation to ruin and proclaimed his opposition before his death.
The account notes M Garbai once a strong Soviet supporter who reportedly opposed Bela Kun. It mentions Alexander Garbai becoming premier in April, Bela Kun rising as foreign affairs and war minister, and questions a Geneva despatch that calls Garbai president posthumously, implying confusion over titles after his death by self-inflicted act.
Budapest reports quote Hungarian people's commissaries meeting Allied envoy Colonel Cunningham. They proposed peaceful resignation of the Soviet and a new government, a plan allegedly forwarded to the supreme council in Paris for consideration.
