Waterbury Connecticut July 28 C L Webster publisher of Grant memoirs bought from Dr J K Wallace the original unconditional surrender letter dated February 16 1867 from General Ulysses S Grant to Confederate General Simon Bolivar Buckner for 200 dollars Wallace related by marriage to General Rawlins and received the letter in 1878 A reproduction appeared in Century magazine in December.

Somerville resident Mrs Almira Hutchins died from burns after an alcohol lamp exploded while she refilled it on Newbury Street West Somerville. She died Tuesday at her mother's Cambridge home after hours of pain leaving two young children. Also under arrest Frank Thompson alias Ormsly for attempting to extort 1800 from Henry Tudor in a case now in court. George E Wilmot's body, missing since last Wednesday at the Point of Pines, has been recovered.
Workers at Dunn Greene & Co Hudson left their jobs about two weeks ago not by command of the Knights of Labor but on their own accord urged by some leaders. The strike brings no financial aid from the Knights. The firm, already damaged by a recent fire, can use the idle period to repair and refit the works.
Dr A Gaston Rooth received a telegraphic message from Gen John C Black commissioner of pensions directing him to consult Dr George P Bartlett and Dr Ahearn to form an organization immediately. Rooth accepts the examiner post and will follow the commissioner's instructions.

The government paper mill in Dalton Massachusetts informed that workers were discharged after five weeks.
