In Werms New Hampshire on July 27 the eighth annual Unitarians grove meeting attracted a large crowd. Rev James Kay Applebee of Boston presented sermons and readings this morning, with afternoon grove exercises led by J C A Hill and prayers by Alfred W Martin. Scripture by Rev T G Milstead and a sermon followed, with evening essay by Rev S C Beach. Tomorrow features sermons and addresses by several ministers, with expectations of a very large attendance for the rest of the week.
Springfield dispatch reports berry pickers uncovered a skeleton on the outskirts of Northampton. The remains were clothed for winter with a rusted seven barreled 22 calibre revolver nearby, two shots fired. Cards suggest the victim may be Fred H. Greenleaf of North Easton, employed by I Bartlett Patten & Co. of Boston. A $1 Canadian banknote and memoranda imply a drug salesman traveling hire.
In DoveR New Hampshire on July 27 the state moved against Emma F Frost for infantice and the case was quashed with her discharge. Her mother Emily Frost was arraigned for second degree manslaughter after a dead infant was found in a doorway. Emily pleads not guilty and is jailed on $1000 bond for the September supreme court term.
The Western Union demanded the Bankers and Merchants four American Rapid wires and they were given up. It next sought sixteen wires from Hartford to Boston and four from Willimantic to New London, but Lawyer Hunter and Sheriff Pomeroy, for T. & J. Johnson with a $500 attachment, refuse the latter demand until they receive orders from the Bankers and Merchants.
Frieburg Maine July 27 The Maine Chautauqua union began its second annual meeting at Martha's Grave with a strong attendance led by president F A Bragdon whose welcome address drew responses from Mrs E G Stickney and other Maine circle representatives. Tomorrow the new octagon hall built for the event will be dedicated to the Chautauqua idea with addresses by notable Methodist brethren.
J A Hamilton former deputy postmaster at McGregor Texas who fled to Mexico after a 1400 defalcation was arrested in Cleburne Texas by Inspector Dice. He had previously been released to retrieve funds from his safe but did not return and escaped to Mexico.
Dover New Hampshire July 27 Newall C Davis arrested tonight on complaint by Leonard A Merrill who accuses Davis of felonious assault on Olive E eight year old child of Merrill Davis denied knowledge of the crime He was arraigned pleaded not guilty and held in one thousand dollars for hearing tomorrow Davis is a former Dover police officer and a widower aged sixty four
MARLBORO MASS July 27 George M Saw tele head salesman at J W Popes furniture warehouse was arraigned in police court on embezzlement charges from his late employer He waived reading of the warrant and pleaded not guilty The case was continued one week with defendant furnishing $500 in sureties.
The Dominion bound from Yarmouth to St John broke her shaft and was spoken by the Empress from St John to Annapolis. The Empress took the Dominion’s passengers and landed them. The Dominion tried to reach Digby under sail and had not been heard since until she was towed into St John today.
Mrs Mary Armstrong 49, wife of Joseph Armstrong formerly of New York, living on Howard avenue Newport, Rhode Island, died tonight by drowning after jumping into a cistern at the rear of the cottage while suffering mental aberration. She leaves a family.
Detroit July 27 State Representative Barry leader of the strikers telegraphs from East Saginaw that A. W. Wright & Co resumed work after compromising with their men. This being one of the largest mills on the river indicates an early settlement of the difficulty.
D E Delong of Worcester New York, 37, died after being struck by a train while walking the Shoston and Albany railroad track toward Dalton. He was in the area for some time copying and enlarging photographs and leaves a widow and two children.
At the Augusta convention, southern mill managers adopted a resolution recommending each mill suspend operations for at least 36 days at its own convenience between August 1 and November 1. The move aims to stabilize industry demand and pricing amid ongoing market pressures.
