Haig’s troops assault along an eight mile front driving from Pozieres to Guillemont with advances into the village and capture of Longueval. The Germans retake portions of the captured positions in a fierce, ongoing battle.
A fast travelling trolley car struck a repair truck near the rails in Ludlow. One man died at the scene and ten others were seriously injured, with at least two likely to die. Injured include Landislas Wadisla 25 of Lowell and Joseph Dias 3 South Street Holyoke among others.
The deceased, believed to be a French man around 35, was found with clothes intact and a notebook in his pocket suggesting further clues about his identity or circumstance of death.
Sir William Ramsay eminent chemist dies at Beechcroft Hazlemere Bucks aged 70. Born Glasgow October 2 1853, knighted 1902. Former president of the British Association for the Advancement of Science. Won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1904. His radium and transmutation work sparked wide debate among scientists.
Winthrop Adams, brother of Dr Celia P Adams, disputes police suicide theory in Tuesday death at Commonwealth Hospital. He tells the Post the family suspects homicide, noting no proof of self-inflicted action and no clear motive.

Back Bay police arrest William F. Campbell 24 for allegedly swapping a four carat diamond ring belonging to his landlady Mrs James F Fagan of 8 Westland Avenue. The May 28 theft saw a dull stone replace the gem valued at 600 dollars with Campbell allegedly selling it for 150.
A special primary election will be held tomorrow to nominate candidates for the Sept. 11 special election to fill the Burleigh vacancy. Democratic nominee Kenneth C. M. Sills faces no opposition. Republicans Bert M. Fernald and Frank D. Guernsey contend, with Guernsey choosing the Senate race over the House. Polls run from noon to 9 p.m.
Mexican snipers and Ninth Massachusetts Regiment outposts exchanged about thirty shots at El Paso. One guard was wounded, no fatalities reported. The earliest fire at 9 08 wounded a canteen wall, lights out, officers evacuated to HQ, Eighth Regiment aided, then quiet in half an hour.
Miss Louise Thyng head nurse at Cush ing Hospital Roxbury wed S Harrison Chamberlain of Boston on a Saturday afternoon at Metcalf Hospital Winthrop. The ceremony was performed by Rev Charles F Otto. Mrs Chamberlain's recovery remains uncertain after a recent appendicitis operation.
A Boston housewife led a successful boycott on beans at 25 cents a quart, prompting wholesalers to cut prices to 50 cents a bushel below last week’s close. New York shippers signaled a $6.50 per bushel price for the week, easing the bean corner as demand shifts to green vegetables and the summer crop outlook improves.

At Rye Beach New Hampshire on July 24 a small dingy carried two Brookline women and three Boston men through night rain and fog. A volunteer lifesaving crew rescued them after their power yacht Sehara struck a sunken ledge and was driven ashore with a large hole in its side.
Women aboard the small craft aided the men at the oars for hours before rescue, all struggling to prevent the boat from swamping. It was their second such ordeal.
London dispatches report the British opening the fourth week of the drive from Pozieres to Guillemont. Despite heavy German reinforcements the British stormed Pozieres outer works and entered the village before ongoing desperate fighting and reports of gaining ground and prisoners.
Intense combat for Guillemont and Longueval with brief British gains in Longueval reversed by a German counter and similar back and forth at Guillemont. Dispatches report ongoing fighting and London awaits Haig's next despatches confirming occupation.
Six thousand Nationalists opposed to Ulster partition gathered in Phoenix Park London July 23. It was the first public meeting allowed since the rebellion. Proceedings showed good feeling and no disorder. Resolutions pledged to oppose by any legitimate means the exclusion of any part of Ulster.

At Cape Henry Norfolk crowds and Allied warships tracked a large four stacked vessel suspected of being the Bremen. The ship halted trading vessels and briefly communicated with a tug before moving beyond the three mile limit. The Bremen’s arrival remained unconfirmed as day ended.
Clarence E. Culver acting cashier of the National Machine Bank in Great Barrington shot and killed himself alone in the bank office. Police cite overwork and mental strain after two superiors resigned due to illness. Culver, 39, had served 15 years and recently spoke of not enduring the pressure much longer.
