Sweetier reports to General Bell that Mexicans fired before Bay State troops shot. Regulars not to supplant Logan's command as requested by Carranza.
British forces report control of most pivotal Pozieres zones and press to seize the highway head toward Bapaume amid continuing heavy fighting from Thiepval to Guillemont along the front. Russians continue advances on the eastern front.
Reports from the front say calm persists south of the Somme with a minor action near Estrees where a FrenchBattery captured German positions. In Verdun the French occupy a German redoubt west of Thiaumont, seizing five machine guns and about twenty prisoners. Berlin downplays British gains along Thiepval Guillemont, noting only minor house penetrations at Pozieres after heavy Australian losses. German forces are alleged moved from Verdun to Somme operations, with Brandenburg Grenadiers claiming victory at Longueval.
In Utica New York July 24 organs from Mrs L P ODonnell 67 who died in a Pullman car en route from Melrose Massachusetts to the Pacific coast were given to Dr A H Hamilton of Auburn for examination An autopsy was performed June 29 by coroner Dr N A Mahady The stomach a kidney and part of the liver had been in custody of District Attorney Bradley Fuller and were turned over today with consent of District Attorney Pelletier of Boston and heirs attorney The woman wealthy made a will in favor of her husband Dr L P ODonnell upon marriage and he did likewise. They were married in Windsor Vermont June 28
Two heat prostrations occurred in Greater Boston yesterday with both victims taken to Frost Hospital Chelsea. Miss Helen Keefe 23 of 106 Arch Street Lynn was overcome in a Lynn car passing through Chelsea and Miss Annie Fuller 81 of 235 Main Street Charlestown was overcome in a Broadway Chelsea drugstore.

Hyannis 22 year old Marion Pomeroy Smith told Post reporter her story detailing a court case in Hartford where she was charged with disrupting married homes. She discusses her love for Maurice Phinney a 38 year old married fishmonger and literateur with two children.
Miss Esther Louise Thyng, gravely ill after gallant surgery for hemorrhage and prior appendicitis, wed Samuel H. Chamberlain in a private ceremony at Metcalf Hospital Winthrop. Doctors reported a sudden improvement and say she now has a fighting chance for recovery. The bride, a Cush ing Hospital trained nurse from Lynn, is the daughter of Henry A. and Mrs. Thyng of 10 Lafayette Park.
In Cleveland Ohio tonight a gas accident in the new water works tunnel from shore to the West Side crib leaves fifteen men dead and eighteen overcome. Firemen and the life-saving crew are rescuing workers. two bodies have been recovered so far.
City Hospital surgeons report Dr Wilfred E Harris not expected to live as Osteopath president Dr Eldridge D Atwood, linked to the Hotel Westminster shooting of Dr Celia P Adams, remains in critical condition. Medical Examiner Leary notified. possible first degree murder charge against Atwood if he dies.
Police blotter records a brief ante-mortem statement secured by Captain Goode of the Back Bay police on the day of the shooting.
Navy officers believe the Bremen has been captured or sunk after British destroyers and a submarine reportedly nailed the undersea merchantman in the North Sea two weeks ago. Mrs. John Sadlinger youngest daughter of John Brown the Harper s Ferry famous figure died at Campbell near San Jose California. She was 65 years old and survived by her sister Sarah who died three weeks earlier at the same place.
London reports that David Lloyd George offered to resign as chief agent after Irish negotiations failed to advance the home rule bill. The Commons debate the plan to implement home rule has collapsed with Redmond accusing the government of breach of faith over Lloyd George’s proposals to Redmond and Carson.
Residents of Jamaica Plain denounce snake cars at a Franklin Improvement Association meeting held at 3170 Washington Street. Joseph L. Webber of the Boston Elevated spoke of addressing grievances with management. Open and through car routes from Forest Hills to Dudley Street and to North Station were urged. Patrick J. McManus presided, with Neil J. Wallace James Burns and Michael Hennessy as speakers.
Both Premier Asquith and Lloyd George admitted a departure from the agreement on two points yet insisted the cabinet could not accept the compromise further. They regretted if the Irish party rejects the amended proposals but warned that no more concessions would be possible without a cabinet rupture. If the Irish members refuse the plan the entire arrangement would be abandoned.
Boy Scouts will search Blue Hills today for 12 year old Axel Olson of 1WA Vernal street Everett missing since Friday. He fled after a neighbor threatened to tell the police and disappeared while playing near a house under construction. Axel is about four feet tall with light curly hair. He wore a black and white blouse red sweater and blue overalls with no shoes.
In Rome on July 24 Pope Benedict intercedes for Sir Roger Casement condemned for treason. The Vatican seeks a royal mercy grant from the British government to spare Casement’s life.
Influential Irish nationalists ask the Pope to use his power to aid Casement, arguing he acted from Irish patriotism rather than treachery. The Pontiff has drawn the attention of Sir Henry Howard in London. The Pope previously secured grace from Emperor Francis Joseph for Cranak, a Bohemian patriot leader executed after imprisonment for anti Austria activity.
The Evening Star reports Colonel Maurice Moore sent a petition to Premier Asquith asking for Casement's death sentence revision. It is signed by six bishops, 26 MPs, and 51 others from universities and learned bodies. Mrs. F Sheedy Skeffington also appeals to the premier to spare Casement.
London July 24 Sir Frederick E. Smith attorney general signals to Casement's solicitors that he cannot grant a fiat. This blocks Casement's appeal against the death sentence for high treason tied to the Dublin rebellion.
Mexican officials protest to American military authorities over shooting by men of the Ninth Massachusetts Regiment across the border. American troops back their men while Mexican officials blame Villa forces for sniping and smugglers. Former consul Andres Garcia presented the protest to General Bell for General Francisco Gonzales.
Mexican officials state no Mexican soldiers fired near the border and accuse Massachusetts sentries of crossing into Mexican territory and firing on civilians. They claim searches on Mexican soil, while Bay State leaders deny the charges and cite American civilians as witnesses. Generals Bell and Sweetser and Colonel Logan back the Ninth’s sentries, saying they fired only in self defense. The protest draws local newspaper attention.
