Sage anecdotes recount Uncle Russell in Wall Street lore
New York July 23. In financial circles the death of Russell Sage known as Uncle Russell prompts reminiscences and anecdotes. Tales include his generosity misgivings over invitations, his penny paper request, and a lifelong habit of still collecting fees at Gould lines. Sage kept attending 195 Broadway meetings and once waited for a $10 fee. He ventured to Wall Street during a squeeze, watched millions flow, and faced lawsuits by three women. His rules for giving emphasized private charity, future impact, and integrity.
