United States Treasury agents in Boston pursue an organized gang of diamond smugglers using new concealment methods. Chief agent Frank F. Johnson and his team have intensified efforts after a tip signaled wholesale smuggling from southern European ports.
Manila July 24 Governor Ide requests military help to punish Pulajanes in Leyte Province. An Eighth Infantry battalion from Iloilo and a Fourth Infantry battalion from Camp Domus have been sent to assist the constabulary. Ladrone leaders Montaton Lakey Villefuerte Devega Carreron Natividad pled guilty to bandolerism at Cavite.
Frank Smith seeks arrest of Duncan Cameron on abduction charges after Cameron allegedly wooed and eloped with Smith's daughter Gretta aged 15. The couple were reported arrested in Elizabeth New Jersey late tonight following a drowning rescue incident in which Smith saved Cameron.
Cameron a 28 year old Fore River shipyard worker once saved at Houghs Neck by Smith, then visited Smith family and courted Smiths daughter. He obtained permission to take her to the beach but authorities in Quincy reported him to Elizabeth police to arrest and hold if found there.
At a Lowell Board of Aldermen session Alderman W H Dodge claimed another member was offered 1000 to oppose the Independent Telephone and Telegraph Company graft. Alderman W J Hayes admitted he received the bribe. Mayor James B Casey later received a letter from New England Telephone and Telegraph asking for an investigation.
Emil Streub father of 12 year old John Streub, believed murdered, held at Great Barrington police station as witness after an eight hour inquest into the boy's death begun this morning and postponed to 10 o'clock tomorrow. He is watched by officers while other family members return home to Hossatonic.
The 11th victim Henry L Sawyer is identified from the ruins of the Amsden block in South Framingham. Sawyer a plumbing inspector and hardware merchant from South Framingham was killed instantly when steel and concrete crushed him in the collapsed building.
A mob of about 1000 attacked the North End car barns in New Bedford on July 24, injuring two police officers and several conductors. The unrest, linked to a first street railway strike, disrupted service and prompted union leaders to call for abstention from riding. Police faced a tough scramble as bricks and missiles flew. two arrests occurred, with warnings posted to employees about duty.
During the noon recess the subject was accompanied by Chief of Police Smith and Officer Rathbun to a nearby restaurant, as indicated by the fragmented text.
In Rutland Vermont on July 24 Vernon H Reed and Mrs Mattie Whitton both of Shrewsbury were killed when their buggy crossed the railroad track ahead of a northbound flyer from Boston. Fred Bissell also of Shrewsbury was seriously injured and later taken to a hospital. Three others, including Fred Cunningham and two unknown Italians, are believed trapped in the wreckage as militia efforts continue.

The Hague reports Queen Wilhelmina’s sudden illness causes national grief as an heir to the throne is not expected in the near term. Officials say her condition is satisfactory and she should regain health soon after a period of distress following prior separation from her husband.
