City considers rent for sidewalk stands outside Old Court House

The Board of Street Commissioners contemplates rent for sidewalk stands in front of the Old Court House on Court Street under the new law. Rates will be set by the street and police commissioners, with similar surveys planned for stands at the burying grounds and market district. A letter offered 2500 dollars a year for exclusive rights to the Old Court House stands for a year, while another proposed 75 dollars a month for a fruit stand on the island in Dewey square. The commission believes jurisdiction ends at street lines and that sidewalks are not covered. Newsdealer and refreshment stands currently operate without city rent, and permits are issued by the public buildings department, with no rents paid yet.
