In Boise Idaho on July 22 E F Richardson pleaded with the jury for the life of William D Haywood for four hours and a half. The court delayed afternoon sessions and began at 6 PM due to extreme heat and juror discomfort.
The preliminary hearing for Dr. I L Magee, a defence witness charged with perjury, continued today with Orchard on the stand for over an hour under close cross examination by McGees counsel. Magee denied being in the Coeur d Alenes at the time of a meeting Wallace. Cr W Aller, other defence witness facing perjury charges, was bound over for district court trial. Richardson attacked Gov Steunenbergs administration during a labor war remark saying the bull pen was used, and noted Steunenbergs death raised questions about a bomb at his gate. He plans to proceed in his argument, weather permitting.

Frank H Harmon of New York City owned the car that crashed at Thaxter and Lincoln streets in Hingham, killing Harmon and severely injuring his wife Mrs Frank Harmon and four others including E B Ditman of New York Thomas McCarthy the chauffeur and T B Luce a New York lawyer. The party had come from New York en route to Maine and had checked into the Hotel Thorndike in Boston the day before.
On Lincoln street at Thaxter street a horse and buggy suddenly blocks the road. McCarthy steers right to avoid impact, wrecking tire rims as the touring car vaults, turning over and tossing four occupants to the street. Eyewitnesses praise McCarthy while blaming the buggy driver for the collision.
Advertisement copy touts Horsford's Aci Phosphate as an effective remedy for obstinate indigestion, nervous dyspepsia, headache and measion. The claim emphasizes quick relief and general digestive support.
Karlsruhe report states Karl Hau, a young law professor from Washington, D C, was condemned to death after a five day trial for the murder of his wife’s mother, Frau Molitor, a Baden Baden resident, on November 6 last.
The prisoner stood calm as the jury verdict was read and was led away to prison by police. Outside, crowds backed Hall’s guilt or innocence with cheers and jeers while Molitor supporters faced danger. after a recess, women in court were sheltered as rioters surged toward the entrance. Infantry and mounted police restored order. many arrests made and a bystander said to be trampled. Dietz signaled an appeal.
New records in torpedo practice reported by crews of the submarine boats Cuttlefish and Octopus. The Cuttlefish made an eight mile submerged run and fired a Whitehead torpedo from 1000 yards that struck bullseye. The Octopus sent four torpedoes from 800 yards, three hit the mark.
Hingham July 22 Charles L Penfield a 42 year old car conductor accused in Dolly Nichols case could not have wed the girl. Records show he has a living wife in Hartford Conn from whom he never separated. Locals say he posed as a widower though he had grown children including a 13 year old Earl Penfield who visited.
Mrs Penfield of 22 Ashley Street Hartford with daughter Stella 19 and Earl 23 married to a prominent Hartford man. Penfield aged 42 linked with Dolly Nichols in East Weymouth and Hingham. Dolly fled, displayed laudanum, carried $90 from Penfield and planned to elope to South Dakota. Nichols family alerted Buffalo police. Nichols grandfather aims to bring Dolly home. Penfield had funds from property in Bristol and Springfield and earned car conductor wages.
Mrs. M. C. Evans of 168 Union Street in Springfield says her son Charles L. Penfield plans to marry Dolly Nichols of Hingham in the West, despite already having a wife in Hartford, Conn. She told a Post reporter she believes he is unbalanced and there are three children from his Hartford marriage. She blames a foolish woman for his troubles and asserts Dolly Nichols is involved in sensational developments.
Three inmates escaped from the State Hospital at Howard near Providence. Police, aided by 300 men, scoured Warwick Cranston and surrounding areas as Providence police alerted. Two of the escapees had prior murder attempts and all three are considered dangerously insane.
Four days ago Frank Weeden of Cranst on escaped by leaping through a rear screen window at the asylum and remains at large. He was committed eight years ago after attempting to murder Miss Daisy F Coulters of Auburn who rejected him. Miss Coulters recovered and now teaches near Providence. Today Thomas McGarrah an and Elton Cook also fled the same ward, escaping through the woods in the rear in prison uniforms. McGarrah, two years ago, became insane at home and tried to kill his wife and two children. Cook was adjudged criminally insane and committed about two years ago.
James Collins aged 16 of Roxbury and Charles Murphy aged 15 of George street were arrested in New York in connection with the death of Dr. James Edwin Russell. After a searching examination by New York police they were released as runaway youths and their parents were notified.
George Borden of Olive Street in Bridgeport helped police locate two youths and a third man after Dr. James Edwin Russell, who later died, said he was drugged assaulted and robbed by three young men in Harlem. Borden slept nearby. others were found wandering by the scene. The victims items included a diamond pin gold watch and a valise with surgical instruments.
In Shelter Cove California between 100 and 150 lives are lost when the steam lumber carrier San Pedro collides with the steamer Columbia offshore near Mendocino. The San Pedro hooks the Columbia bow, both vessels sink, and survivors report events as rescuers from Roanoke George W. Elder and Daisy Mitchell respond and Eureka follows. A body believed to be Edward Butler of Portland is recovered from a life raft.
Oakland witnesses recount the wreckage strewn sea after the San Pedro and Columbia collision. Roanoke passengers say rescued crew members asked families to report they were safe, and bodies were laid on a bier under an American flag atop the Elder. Two lifeboats and rafts showed no life aboard.
