Colonel Isaac L. Goff a real estate promoter and politician lies ill in Washington Park home as deputies seek to serve arrest writ. His wife and two daughters guard doors and windows through the night to prevent service amid a barricaded darkened house and Britain of alarm.
Writ issued in civil case by Atlantic National Bank claims Colonel Goff obtained a 6000 loan through deceit by misrepresenting Home Realty Company as solvent. Bondsmen set at 10000. Rumors say many small investors may lose life savings as homes and lands may have been mortgaged before sale. Investigation expected. possible criminal action. Continued on page 4.
The North German Lloyd steamship Kaiser Wilhelm II listed while coaling at Bremerhaven. Water poured into bunkers and boiler rooms through open coal ports, causing the vessel to keel over and rest on its side at low tide before slipping upright with the rising tide.
Initial impression blamed strikers for damaging the vessel, but company investigations found this incorrect. Pumps freed water as cabins escaped serious damage. ship not ready to sail for days. Kaiser Wilhelm's 400 first class passengers moved to Bremen and other lines. second class and steerage to Trave. Accident blamed on improper trimming discovered during refloat as tide rose and water rushed in.
Jasper Quince of Vincennes, Md, sues Skanner & Co for 30000 damages claiming negligence caused his suicide attempt to fail. He bought a rope from the firm and, as he prepared to hang himself, the rope broke. A relative heard the fall, struck him with a broom and summoned police.
Strike began April 3 and ended July 21 after unions won a $1 weekly wage rise and a half hour shorter day. About 372 workers struck, 600 strikebreakers imported, 3000 members granted demands, with costs estimated at $20,000 to unions and $75,000 to eight firms. Two deaths and numerous injuries reported.
The Boston Team Drivers Union 25 ended a 16 week strike that began April 3 over a $1 weekly raise and a half hour less work daily. Fewer than 400 workers were affected. The union did not see the end as a master teamsters victory, as they avoid direct dealings with the union.
Many strikers have found union-wage work under union rules while others still out expect returns to old jobs. About 110 drivers remain idle. 3000 members gain better pay. President Tobin laments lack of prestrike talks and praises arbitration. Brodbine Hall crowd votes to accept merchants’ offer and end the strike at all stables including R. S. Brine Company.

Marquis Ito likely to meet the new Emperor Tuesday to define Japan's role in Korea. General Kasagawa withdraws one machine gun from Palace Square and arsenals remain guarded. District Assembly 30 Knights of Labor led a protest against the Franklin Union construction claiming unfair labor conditions. They urged a boycott of the project upon completion unless unions secure favorable terms, amid a citywide labor stir. The Boston Central Labor Union postponed action, while the Building Trades Section condemned the project and called for trustees’ resignations.
Seventy eight delegates from diverse unions attend a Knights of Labor meeting and unanimously vote to urge the major organization to ignore the Franklin Institute building until it is erected under union conditions. A postponement follows due to Frank K. Foster’s illness, with many delegates wishing an immediate decision.
Milford dispatch reports 16 year old Margaret Nagle Barsamiam, wife of Carl Barsamiam, fled to shot him with a 22 caliber Flo bert rifle at 5 45 this morning near their home three miles outside Milford Centre. The bullet struck his groin and he is expected to recover unless blood poisoning follows.
The Barsamiams tell authorities they both fired deliberately in a yard target session. Mrs Barsamiam aimed at her husband and said she would shoot him, smiling, then fired as he believed it was a joke, causing his fall. She notified his father after the act.
Constantinople July 21. With no word from the Turkish government on the matter, American Ambassador Leishman has sent a note to the Porte calling attention to the bomb blast in front of the American embassy on Sunday night. He hopes to soon inform Washington that energetic steps have been taken to identify and punish the guilty parties and prevent a repetition.
Paralyzed with fear Mrs Fanny Mercier sat in her car as a traveling circus tent blew down in a Bethel storm. In the chaos the vehicle turned around and lightning lit a giant elephant's face inches from hers, heightening the terror of the moment.
Mrs. Mercier fainted in fear when a windstorm toppled a tent during the Frank A Robbins traveling show. An elephant rampage and camel herd broke from keepers, driving crowds to exits and crippling panic. Many injured lightly. keeper recaptured elephants and returned them to the train.
The forecast calls for fair conditions in New England on Monday with potential showers Tuesday night. Eastern Maine should stay fair, winds light to variable. In eastern New York expect partly cloudy Monday with showers at night or Tuesday and light to fresh variable winds becoming southeast.
