AROUSED OVER MEXICAN ISSUE Washington July 21 The Senate foreign relations committee voted to recommend a resolution by Senator King asking the State Department for information on measures to protect American citizens and property in Mexico. The move followed the Tampico incident as sentiment rose over the Mexican affair.
Washington dispatch describes the American secret service uncovering a German high command betrayal plot. It notes German officers forming a vendetta against traitors as details arrive in New York from the military intelligence directorate.
Samuel L. Powers of the public trustees warned that the Boston Elevated must rely on generous patronage. If riders do not support the 10 cent fare, the line faces being forced to find a solution within 30 days.
Washington July 21 At midnight tonight the known casualty list in the citys race war stood at 10 including two deaths while police reports placed a higher figure. A 17 year old Negro girl shot and wounded, a city detective killed by a shot through the breast, and a provost guard held at bay by a black shooter from a garage door before being felled. Streetcar clashes and a white man wounded four after a Negro fired into a crowd before being stopped by another detective who fired seven times.
In London the peace treaty bill clears a second and third reading as Lloyd George argues Ireland is not a single nation and urges solving the Irish question before self determination. He says Ulster cannot be forced into home rule, while Home Rulers may have it for themselves if desired.
The premier described the Irish convention’s failure as an attempt to apply Wilsonian principles to Ireland, saying self determination hinges on Ireland being a single nation. Lloyd George faces calls to clarify his Ireland policy while T P O’Connor voices disappointment. Meanwhile a balloon disaster unfolds with a fireball and parachutes as debris rains on a bank roof.
A balloon carrying five people exploded after cruising the loop, crashing into the Illinois Trust and Savings Bank. Ten dead and over twenty injured, three were passengers, rest bank employees. Incident occurred at 4 50 p m.
Paris dispatch reports a letter signed by Secretary Lansing Henry White and General Tasker H Bliss on Shantung not viewed as a protest. The note advised against ceding Shantung to Japan and was written before signers learned of any decision. It was said to be an opinion requested by President Wilson.
