Railroads discuss boycott of Chicago and Alton in New York talks
A July conference in New York among railroad presidents and bankers focused on boycotting the Chicago and Alton. Banks may demand routes east of Chicago and west of the Missouri River refrain from prorating or sharing business with the Alton. Officials deny sale plans and say any rate cuts reflect rivals’ moves. The joint committee announced tariff changes effective Aug 1 for grain and corn, and neon rates to be filed with the Interstate Commerce Commission. The Chicago and Eastern Illinois earned $46,300 in mid July, down from prior weeks, while Louisville and Nashville reported $316,775 with a $21,495 rise.
