Two prisoners escape the county jail while a deputy sheriff is wounded in the incident. The man later killed by mistaken identity. The chaotic scene unfolds as police pursue suspects and assess damage across the county.
In Edgerton Williams county Ohio Hiram Hoadley Jr killed his wife Miss S E Newman and her father at dawn firing multiple shots after a separation and divorce dispute. He then shot his wife again and killed himself leaving four children. He was a former Williams county politician and respected citizen.
The article announces arrival of sleeping mats imported last year and a new November order, delayed in shipping, now here by May 1. It notes heavy inquiries and instructs that mats will be exhibited in the rotunda with varied prices, widths, and qualities for hot weather.

In Paris on July 21 Marxists marched to Pere la Chaise cemetery and laid wreaths on the graves of dead Communists. Liebknecht and others spoke at the tombs of Boerne and Heine. A Prosiblists group led by Mrs Lesant visited, decorating graves with wreaths and grasses taken from Chicago Anarchists’ graves. proceedings orderly.
The Zealandia arriving from Honolulu says Samoa is quiet. The American war ship Alert has left Honolulu with supplies for the Nipsic, waiting at Zanning Island. The Alert will tow the Nipsic.
Bayreuth July 21 The Wagner festival opened with a fine rendering of Parsifal. Attendance was enormous with hundreds turned away. The King of Saxony and other royalties attended. There is unprecedented demand for tickets. The Regent of Bavaria visits mid August to meet Emperor William and Empress Augusta Victoria.
London reports the world sugar bank agencies hold capital of 3002600 pounds with five sixes of the Salt Union stock reserved for Britain already subscribed. A 15 shilling premium is offered on the new company shares as listings launch in London and New York tomorrow. Also noted are Wilkie Collins’s critical illness, the Surrey cricket score of 355, and Paris’s rejection of the Egyptian conversion scheme.
Curiaco July 21 The executive board of the Knights of Labor assigned G W Wright J J Holland and John Devlin to hear complaints and appeals in sessions at the Sherman House Two or three minor cases were decided The board called assemblies to raise funds for striking miners in the Braidwood Indiana and Brazil Indiana districts No assessments were made Powderly and others spoke at a mass meeting at Stricklayers Hall Peoria and Monroe streets The meeting was private with passwords and doorkeepers and continued until midnight sharp and bitter remarks were reported
Prospectors in the chalk cliffs of the Missouri near St Helena, near Yankton, discover a natural cave opening with eight human skeletons scattered on the floor. The bones’ age is unknown, and experts ponder they may be early settlers killed or starved during Indian attacks while seeking shelter in the cave.
Two prisoners W A Smith and Richard N Mansfield escaped the county jail by the slate roof. Deputy Goldsoll and a police officer pursued them, exchanging about a half dozen shots. Goldsoll was fatally wounded and died later at hospital. A buggy carrying the pair was found with one dead man inside and weapons, rope, and a stolen horse. the other fugitive is believed wounded.
From Olympia to Boise City the Idaho constitutional convention advances. Boise City set as capital for ten years with House and Senate sizes fixed, laws on contagious disease quarantine, and preamble and bill of rights to be tackled next. North Dakota and South Dakota reports note surprise constitution plans and adjournments.
In Concorp New Hampshire Harrison era offices spark a heated contest with candidates for naval officer of Boston port and United States district attorney. Frank D. Currier A S Twitchell and Franklin Worcester lead for naval post amid G A R backing. Colby bill author Calby and Remick vie for district attorney while Wood French duel for internal revenue posts.
In Deer Park Maryland on July 21 President Harrison heard Rev E D Meade speak on the duties of business men as Christians and rejected political manipulation by improper agencies. He and his father in law stayed for communion and walked at the cottage in the afternoon. Private Secretary Halford denounced a circulating tale about Mrs Harrison inviting a physician to Kilrains party as false. The President planned to tackle public business next day with no appointments expected.
The steamer Hawks hurst arrived in New York after a 2300 mile voyage to Brazil with a fire smouldering in her hold. Oil, tow and tar formed the cargo when the blaze began. Captain Robinson kept the crew aboard despite their wish to desert. The Emperor of Brazil honored the brave captain with tokens.
Providence July 21 Professor James K. Allen a noted aeronaut says he would ascend again if the balloon is found and believes the missing craft is the one he flew at Coney Island last December. He criticizes Hogan for risky inflation attempts and outlines repairs he made to the balloon and car. He doubts Hogan was killed by gas but fears the man is not alive and suggests he may have been picked up by a vessel.
Washington July 21 Army orders extend leaves of absence for Captain Charles B. Western of the Fourteenth Infantry by three months and Captain George A. Drew of the Third Cavalry by two months. Naval orders assign Chief Engineer W W Heaton to temporary duty at the West Point foundry on July 25 and detach Lieutenant Alexander W McCracken from the Naval Academy on July 31 with duty in the Bureau of Ordnance starting August 1.
Charles Degnan attempted to board a moving freight at Southington. His foot caught in the caboose and he was dragged a quarter mile. He suffered fatal injuries as his head was mashed, an arm torn, with brains and blood along the track.

At Niagara Falls on July 21 hundreds watched as a barrel carrying a Newfoundland dog was set afloat by Walter Odell. The craft drifted toward the Canadian side then into rapids, passed the Third Sister Island reef, and went over Horseshoe Falls at 8:50 PM without surfacing. Debris and the dog were not recovered.
A July 12 death by poison at a Third Avenue lodging house is linked to a supposed Miss Kitty Doane or Dane of Toronto. Authorities suspect Kate McCormack of Cleveland, who fled with sewing machine agent Liam Kibler. Yonkers tinsmith Thomas Reynolds claims kinship and will check the woman’s effects to confirm.
A movement to consolidate natural gas companies in Ohio and Indiana into a trust is under way with the sanction of Standard Oil magnates Calvin S. Brice and Oliver H. Payne. They already hold a majority of stock and will buy remaining independents.
Alfred Le Chance was severely stabbed in the hip side and back after a late night fight in Fall River. He walked home weakened by blood loss. one wound reached the bone. Brothers John and James Noon were arrested and charged with the stabbing.

Special Officer Whitman seized a large amount of stolen goods at the James Thompson pawn shop 149 Pleasant Street. The items, ranging from cheap to fine clothing, were linked to thieves captured Saturday evening. James E Nason identified items stolen from his No 1 Rockland Street home. James Thompson and wife Martha were arrested on suspicion of receiving stolen property.
