Sir James Fergusson said government actions would depend on circumstances and England was not bound by any pledge. He declined to confirm the Rome publication.
London July 19 The trial of Mr William O Brien against Lord Salisbury for slander began today. O Brien testified he never incited murder or robbery on platform or in his paper United Ireland and never advocated crime. Sir Edward Clarke cross examined to show that the witness editorial articles and speeches justified Salisbury language.
An election in the east division of Marylebone filled the seat left by Lord Charles Beresford. Conservative candidate Mr Boulners won with 2579 votes, defeating Gladstonian Mr George Levenson-Gower who had 2086. Lord Charles had 1081 votes previously, while Professor Beesly the Home Ruler had 1616.

Denver July 19 The Criminal Court grand jury investigating corruption charges tied to the last General Assembly’s purchases harshly criticized officials. Warrants were issued for Secretary of State James Rice Sheriff Weber and partner George H Graham of Graham Weber. Also named were W H Lawrence Co stationery provider State Printers Collier Cleveland and firm, all charged with conspiracy to defraud the state. Rice and Weber are in the East and not served. others were arrested and posted bail from 1000 to 1500 dollars.
A Parkersburg dispatch reports the worst cloudburst in Little Kanawha Valley history. The flood destroyed homes and crops across multiple counties, with numerous logs and boats sunk, towns wrecked, and several deaths, including in Morristown and Pill Brush. Major rivers rose rapidly, bridges washed away, and rail lines disrupted.
In Curacao on July 19 Alexander Sullivan, held on 20000 bail awaiting grand jury action, contends he can refute the charges.
