A Nova Scotia vessel salting or icing preserved halibut was taxed half a cent per pound on arrival in Gloucester. The president appointed Daniel J. Welch for Montana, John C. Henderson for Indiana's eleventh district, William B. Anderson for Illinois third, and Thomas Cooper for Illinois eighth. Most internal revenue offices are filled though 19 remain vacant. Samuel N. Holliday Jr. and William R. Henderson were named assistant superintendents at Yellowstone National Park. Cincinnati July 9 Baltimore and Ohio railroad suit yields 5070 dollars fine for leased wire from 1883 to May.
James Sweeney of Manchester, a Barnum's circus elephant herd helper, was fatally struck with a foot and tusks by one of the elephants while unfastening its feet. The attack caused panic among visitors before the animal was subdued. James B. Kelly, Maine native and circus employee, survived a scalp wound from an attack while resting under a tent wagon.
The Pacific Mail steamer Colina arriving from Panama via Mazatlan reports serious trouble with Mexican authorities. Mazatlan officials demanded the bills of lading and cargo manifest for inspection under a new law. The captain, unprepared, paid a $100 fine under protest after a 14 hour detention and sailed July 13.
Old Orchard Maine July 19 The Salvation Army opened its national meeting with a morning knee drill and hallelujah march. Capt Shirley of Boston led a 10 AM meeting on the campground as 2,000 attendees heard exhortations and testimonies. A praise session followed, then an evening salvation meeting led by Capt France of Lawrence. Reinforcements expected tomorrow with 22 officers and 65 soldiers present.
Providence report notes Robert Gilmore twelve drowned after being knocked overboard by a boat boom in the Kichemint river at Warren. In Richmond Maine George Peters unspecified age drowned at Bath by a sailboat accident with body not yet recovered. In Concogo New Hampshire fifteen year old Joseph Molette drowned while bathing in the Merrimac river at Penacook with body not yet recovered.
An unknown German man about 50 was found in a field half a mile from Westfield, Massachusetts, yesterday with his throat cut from ear to ear. A razor lay nearby and authorities believe he will not recover. The assailant acted about 24 hours prior, then moved to the river and back to a hiding place. He is conscious but mute, and no ID is found on him.
In Concord Hubbard Dodge seven, playing near freight cars, was instantly killed when he slipped under a train. In Rutland Mary McDonagh seventy, slipped on stairs Saturday, fractured skull, died hours later.
Mrs. M. L. Kempton of Eba near Batavia killed herself with a revolver today while her husband waited in a carriage to take her to the depot for a Niagara excursion. No motive is known. the Kemptons were well to do and happy.
Gen Grant enjoyed a peaceful night at McGregor with a steady pulse of 72 this morning. Improved condition credited to cool clear weather and restful night, aiding recovery from prior illness or fatigue.

A Santa Fe passenger train leaving El Paso yesterday struck a washed out culvert near Wallace New Mexico and split. Engineer Harvey Wilson two firemen and an extra fireman were killed. One unnamed passenger had a broken leg and the express messenger was badly hurt. Passengers were moved today with no delays to other trains.
Five men trailed 17 year old Ella Callahan through Central Park this afternoon and two of them assaulted her. Park police have arrested Will Loeffel and Daniel Garey, identified by the girl as part of the group and as assailants.
In Joplin Missouri Neal Thornton who murdered Daniel Sheehan a policeman at Joplin yesterday was lynched there this morning. Thornton had a reputation as a dangerous man and shot Sheehan as he tried to arrest him for an old offense.
John Roach the shipbuilder assigned his property for the benefit of creditors. Assignees are George W. Quintard and E. Weed. Top cash priorities include William Rowland and P. W. Gallaudet & Co. The move aims to protect the government contracts while creditors seek full investigations amid rumblings of bankruptcy.
Chester Pa July 19 The failure of John Roach causes shock with payroll shrinking from over 15000 weekly to about 7000 then cut by tomorrow lay off about 400 workers paid four days wages. Only enough to finish the Mallory ship Comal in New Jersey channel. Yard faces idleness as Boston Chicago cruiser and Puritan monitor work paused.

Miss Mary Crosby, 16, of Bath was lured into woods near Pleasant Point and attacked. She was taken aboard a sail boat and found exhausted. William A Ray was arrested. the girl lies seriously ill with possible brain fever. Ray to be arraigned and jailed until August term. In a separate incident George Dolay’s 10 year old son was shot in the face by a discharged revolver during a drinking quarrel.
From Yankton Dakota advices twenty five cases were reported today among Russians with general deaths noted during the week. The outbreak is described as spreading in epidemic form in Scotland and surrounding districts.
A major blaze in Norwood Mass destroyed about a third of the New York and New England railroad car shops at Norwood Central. The fire, discovered around 12:30 PM, rapidly consumed carpenter, blacksmith, foundry and machine shops, with losses estimated at 150000 to 200000 dollars. Fire departments from Dedham and Boston aided, engines arrived by 2:10 PM, and most walls were ruined though some shops remained intact. The works employ 250 to 300 men. about 75 were briefly displaced.
C P Boynton of South Coventry says he was robbed of about 375 dollars yesterday while observing estate payments in Willimantic. He collapsed from heart trouble near the river behind the depot and awoke later with bruises, unaware of the assailants. Police doubt sheared clues exist.

Frank Ayer of Lowell, 36, had been at work at Southwick and on his way home when he collapsed in front of Albany railroad station Saturday afternoon. Also reported, John Cainan died after being crushed between two cars at a Somerville switch table. Ager, 66, James McLean of Decatur court injured in a Charlestown fall. A raid on Richmond street homes led to arrests. Staging collapse at Bennett schoolhouse injures two masons. Robbery charge against Jesse Brown leads to recovered stolen property. A widow Johanna Walsh found dead in Brighton vestibule. Patrick McDonough, 18, jailed for pigeon thefts and related burglaries.
Dennisport Massachusetts reports the Cape Cod Spiritualists closing their nineteenth annual camp meeting in Harwich at 9 pm. The gathering featured choir singing, an inspirational poem, and remarks by Mrs. Kate Styles and Mrs. Colby. Amelia Colby of Michigan spoke in the morning on the mission of Spiritualism to humanity, with thousands attending via excursion trains from Boston and New Bedford. Henry LeP tie Sunday teary age 15 played with a banana peer target on Salem Street. Aaron Pinkeofsky, 13, warned to stop. Henry teased, Aaron drew a pocket knife and stabbed Henry in the left leg, earning six stitches. Henry taken to city hospital. Aaron arrested and later bailed.
Emanuel Cravaika, about 20, was arrested at 10:40 A M Sunday and jailed with Cambridge officers. About 1 A M Sunday burglars entered the home of Joseph Enos at 26 Cambridge Street and stole 100 in gold, Enos’s watch, and 5 from John Yavis. Enos’s daughter woke to gas light and saw Cravalka, a former resident, in the room taking money. he was later found at a North End house and arrested.
Mr Willian J. Conklin on Saturday evening opened for private inspection an elegant saloon at No 7 Congress street a few doors from State street. He spared no expense in fitting up the place and decorations are costly and harmonious. The boards behind the bar are elaborate and a marvel of artistic skill and the cigar counter and storage for cigars are features valued by connoisseurs.
The annual communication of the grand lodge of the Theatrical Mechanics association will be held at Grand Army hall Boston at Washington and Essex streets beginning at Le A.M. on Sunday next. On Monday July 27 delegates will tour harbor by invitation of Boston leave, leaving a wharf at 10 A.M. In the evening they will attend a performance at Oakland Garden by courtesy of Manager Rich.
