South Abington Mass July 20 One of the most peculiar employer employee disputes began at the Davis Gurney sons shoe factory agents for James Tucker & Co over 100 men left work with more expected to follow The lock was placed on a lower story door forcing workers to use the main exit on the second floor The firm says the lower floor has three entrances only one for stock and the lock was meant to deter peddlers and loafers State Inspector Edward Thomas ordered the lower door removed weeks ago but the firm later re locked it The workers oppose the lock saying it blocks passage and caused the walkout
Regina N W T July 20 The negotiations to bring Gabriel Pumont and Dumais from Montana to testify for Riel continue with plans to speed the trial, not exceeding a week. Many defence witnesses have arrived at Batouche, and Gen Middleton is among the early expected witnesses. Catholics protest Riel’s nonattendance at Mass held at the barracks by Father Dugas.
In New York on July 20 an adjourned meeting of Texas and St Louis railroad bondholders heard the reorganization committee say 450000 must be raised to meet pressing road demands and up to 2500000 to liquidate receivers certificates and expenses. A special committee was named to raise the funds and postpone the Aug 4 sale for 30 days, with Gee Cappell, William Mertins, J u Parramore and Louis F Wolff empowered.
The New York attorney general sends to the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children in Rochester an opinion allowing commitment of any child under 16 to charitable reformatories or similar institutions. It covers youngsters formerly sent to penal facilities and asserts orphan asylums and industrial schools must receive magistrate-committed children, with several test cases awaiting adjudication.
Judge Barker opened the July term as John Stiles of Savoy received four years in state prison for shooting at E. Streeter with a shotgun last May. Arthur and Emma Huard of North Adams were jailed a year for adultery. Bunce and Bunce, Egremont farmers, released on 1600 bail as they face trial for barn arson insurance fraud. Lawyer Parkhurst of North Adams stands for a steerage trial on conspiracy to blackmail Wednesday.
The Columbus Hocking Valley and Toledo railroad company told the stock exchange directors have declared a 13 percent dividend payable in stock on August 19. The capital stock increases by 1,383,500 to total 11,700,000. Applications to list the new stock must be made by August 11 before trading on the floor.
In St Louis on July 20 the Wabash receivers announce interest payments for St Louis Kansas City and Northern real estate bonds totaling 105 000 to be paid August 1 and St Charles bridge bonds 30 000 due August 15. Bondholders will be notified in New York tomorrow. Efforts continue to pay Old North Missouri 7s totaling 210 000 by September 10.
Charles E. Lewis of Pittston was arraigned for stealing a horse and wagon from Edgar Jones of Dead River and held in Farmington jail. Jailer Jewell later recognized him as Augustus Grove, an escapee from Augusta jail on July 11, who admitted the identity this afternoon.
Joseph Kist a known figure in local aquatic circles attempted suicide by leaping from the Brooklyn Bridge between 5 and 6 pm. He fell into the river and was carried downstream by the current to the foot of Chouteau avenue nearly a mile away where he made a safe landing.
A Grand Trunk special freight train and a westbound construction train collided near London Ontario. Both engines were badly smashed and ten freight cars wrecked. Engineer J McFadden of the construction train was crushed beneath the engine and died. Others escaped with minor injuries. Heavy damage reported.
Gustav Schaffel the German who assaulted two German girls in Lawrence and fled was captured in Providence where he worked in a mill. He was brought back by Officer Grabner and will be tried in Lawrence police court tomorrow morning.
Mrs Strickline a widow of Pate Strickland who was killed by Floyd Williams now on death row faced a Wolfe circuit court special term trial for complicity. She received a penitentiary sentence of 99 years in a Kentucky case tied to the murder.
Frank W. Smith local agent at Wheeler and Wilson Manufacturing was jailed today for embezzling small sums over time. He received 26 dollars and returned 10 dollars repeatedly until he amassed several hundred. He faces trial by jury in January.
John Gaunt, arrested for the brutal Hoboken murder of his wife Emma, died by hanging in his county jail cell this morning. He used his bed cord to strangle himself with his feet touching the floor.
Newport New Hampshire July 20 Eugene Pike fined ten dollars and costs for employing a disabled horse in baying. The complaint by Thomas E O Marvin of Portsmouth secretary of the society for the prevention of cruelty to animals, who shot the horse in a pasture last night.

Kansas City dispatch says 1300 soldiers in camp near Kiowa. Cheyenne warriors in camp west of Ft. Reno plan to attend a powwow with Generals Sheridan and Miles once hunting needs pause, while settlers fear conflict.
Miss A. Taylor, eight year president of Wheeling Female College, disappeared from Wheeling West Virginia after resigning to take a Worcester Massachusetts post. Furniture sold at auction. creditors claim over 1500 dollars. She is about 60, described as shrewd and seeking temperance leadership. Her location is unknown and creditors may pursue.
Barnum's 30 year old elephant Albert, blamed for killing keeper James Sweeney in Nashua, was transported to a Keene ravine and shot by 33 Keene Light Guard at 15 paces. The animal, valued at about $10,000, fell quietly. chalk marked heart and brain. remains donated to the Smithsonian.
Bloomington Illinois July 26 a German farmer Abe Denser faced divorce action and an injunction from wife. He reportedly drove stock worth 2000 dollars into his barn and set it ablaze burning the structure and stock. Denser is missing and believed to have perished in the fire.
New York July 20 Catherine C Carpenter wife of ex Sheriff Carpenter of Tarrytown dies at an early hour this morning from cancer of the throat. Her illness mirrors General Grants disease with months of suffering and weeks without nourishment. Judge Phelps denies bail reduction for Nathaniel Sands ex tax commissioner of New York arrested on a judgment of over 142000 in a city suit for 75000 plus interest. National Printing Telegraph Company incorporates with capital of 1000690 and names John Rooney Abner McKinley Mark W Samuel Daniel V Essick Geo H Fearen Louis J Morrison and Wm M Denman as corporators.
Miss Lizzie F. Smith presided at a memorial meeting in the sixth judicial courthouse in New York honoring Miss Fannie Parnell. Attendees were sparse while Wm. S. O'Brien and James Flynn spoke. Smith read an original poem and Mrs. Delia Stuart Parnell gave thanks for the admiration shown by American women for her daughter.
BRATTLEBORO Vermont July 20 Arthur Leonard aged 18 drowned today while bathing in Whetstone brook. Two sisters and their brother retrieved the body but could not revive him. ROCKLAND Maine July 20 Ezekial Pease of Martinsville drowned after going overboard from schooner F Nelson off Tenants harbor while at sea. FARMINGTON Maine July . Lore Thompson of Solon drowned while bathing in Sandy river this evening.

The Maharajah Dhuleep Singh plans to sell the Elvedon sporting estate in Suffolk near Thetford, adjacent to Euston. The 17 000 acre property is largely devoted to game rearing with 13 000 acres in hand. Last year sales totaled 85 859 heads including 74 894 rabbits, 6 780 cock pheasants and 2 329 partridges. The season’s bay at Elvedon reached 9 600 pheasants.
In Anna Maine a farmer Wilmet Howard aged 68 killed his wife 52 with a boot jack and razor then tried to hang himself and later cut his own throat. The scene showed a bloodied house with the woman dead on the kitchen floor and the husband later found alive wounded. Coroner's jury attributed death to bootjack and razor used by Howard.
At Mt McGregor on July 20 Gen Grant was wheeled in a bath chair to the eastern lookout. He surveyed the valley and mountains, then returned to the cottage where he rested. A later view on the piazza showed him seated in a dressing gown, exhausted but present.
A Douglas Kansas dispatch reports six people drowned in Walnut River seven miles below Emporia after rains raised the stream. Anson Corman and wife, and Mrs J Corman, their son's wife, were swept away in a wagon then the second wagon with Mr and Mrs Keats and Mr and Mrs Jay Corman followed. Anson Corman was the only survivor. By today three bodies had been recovered.
From Yokohama Advices to AP report ex-Gov Hubbard Texas and United States minister to Japan was received by the emperor on July 2. Bingham presented his recall letter. Hubbard spoke on boosting US Japan trade. emperor responded and signified a wish to confer the first class Rising Sun on Bingham. Bingham sails July 26.
Springfield Mass July 20 The Greylock Park association stockholders met at North Adams and organized choosing W L Brown as president and officers with a board from Adams North Adams and Williamstown. Twelve thousand dollars of twenty thousand authorized by legislative enactment is already subscribed. Plans for building a road up Greylock mountain were discussed.

John Collopy 30 a New York workman was shot dead by Michael Casey who admitted the act. Both men were single and had been drinking. Jacob Walp, connected to John Frey’s arrest in Reading Pa, was found near Fleetwood seeking work. Frey to be released.
