West Boston Bridge Nears Completion in 1905
Passengers on cars over the West Boston bridge observe rapid progress on the new structure. Mayor Daly predicts completion by August 1, 1905, about seven months before the contract ends, with an expected cost near two million dollars. Attention to its arch, lighting, and castle-like pillars compares it to famed show bridges abroad. Work on Cambridge approaches starts late September, with First Street closures planned to shift traffic from Main Street.

Brighton Abattoir Runs Day and Night to Meet Meat Demand
The Brighton slaughter houses operated continuously to meet an unprecedented demand for meat in Boston. A surge of livestock arrived Friday and Saturday, with 167 cattle killed and dressed on Saturday and about 700 sheep slaughtered, as officials anticipate a 5000 head drove early in the week. Prices climbed, beef at wholesale rising to 12 cents and lamb to 15 17 cents, while little beef remained in cold storage. Authorities plan extra hiring to process incoming livestock and avert a meat famine, barring railroad strikes disrupting shipments.
