Lake Champlain becomes the setting for Vermont journeymen deserters from Fort Ethan Allen evading pursuit in a remarkable escape. The fugitives slipped away yesterday and a continued report appears on Page 4-Fifth Column.

Heroic mother dies saving her son on Gloucester tracks

Mrs Katie Miller aged 30 sacrificed her life to save her two year old son Augustus who wandered onto the rear railroad tracks near their West Gloucester home. The Boston and Maine train struck them both as the mother lunged to reach the child. The child was badly mangled and the mother died instantly. Augustus was the wife and son of Augustus Miller who had just sailed on the schooner Mary M Harty for a mackerel trip. It will be weeks before he learns of the tragedy.

Larceny charge over 4700 against broker Hatcher

George F. P Penniman of Worcester accuses Charles M. Hatcher of Brookline head of Charles M. Hatcher & Co brokers of stealing 4700 entrusted for investment. Hatcher was arrested by Inspector Gaddis and turned over to Worcester Inspector O Day. Penniman, a well to do veterinary surgeon, says the money was misappropriated.

Four firemen injured as blaze hits Washington Street lodging house

A four story wooden building at 869 Washington Street burned last evening injuring four firemen from Engine 26 and Ladder 13. Hose failure and falling debris caused the injuries including severed artery in John Flynn's wrist and bad gashes on Dennis Driscoll. Property loss estimated at 2500 dollars. The blaze started on the third floor, owners listed as Mr and Mrs Gaffney. weather forecast remains fair and warm for Boston.

Lost 1000 in Ambush at Yinkow Coast

General Samsonoff halted the Japanese advance near Yinkow on July 11 as Russian Cossacks ambushed their column. The coast road attack failed in marshy terrain, with six Russians killed and seven wounded while 1000 Japanese were put out of action.
