Heroic mother dies saving her son on Gloucester tracks
Mrs Katie Miller aged 30 sacrificed her life to save her two year old son Augustus who wandered onto the rear railroad tracks near their West Gloucester home. The Boston and Maine train struck them both as the mother lunged to reach the child. The child was badly mangled and the mother died instantly. Augustus was the wife and son of Augustus Miller who had just sailed on the schooner Mary M Harty for a mackerel trip. It will be weeks before he learns of the tragedy.
