In Cleveland Ohio a grand stand collapsed during an amateur game at Brighton Park. About 200 fell to the earth in a single heap, with 20 plus injuries including broken arms and legs and nearly 100 bruises. Spectators aided victims as ambulances were summoned and hospital care began. Authorities blame underpinning removal for the collapse.
In Providence East Providence, Antonio Nardezzo, 19, shot and killed Filomena Piedoladi, 38, after a dispute over $3 with her husband Michael Piedoladi. The husband fired back with a shotgun as Nardezzo fled. Nardezzo was later arrested.

In Lowell on July 17 two bathers perished in the Merrimac River near the Moody street bridge. John Vlakhos, 30, a Greek worker at the Lawrence Mill, lived on Moody street and was unmarried. Fifteen minutes after he disappeared, Ferdinand Bousquet, 15, son of Mrs. Sarah Bousquet of West Sixth street, drowned after raising his hands and sinking. Rescue attempts by companions failed and both bodies were recovered.
Ray H. Smith aged 19 son of Mr and Mrs J F Smith of Lewiston drowned while swimming in the Androscoggin River He was a Lewiston High School graduate and had attended Dartmouth College
Arthur O. Hill a 23 year old Nashua Telegraph employee drowned in the Nashua River this evening after his canoe drifted from shore during a trip with a young woman. He waded beyond his depth while attempting to recover the canoe.
South Norwalk reports John Segrew of East Norwalk drowned while swimming at Oyster Shell Point. He turned face down, floated for minutes, and friends recovered the body. Officials suspect heart disease as the cause.
In Portland harbor today Martin Howard aged 35 a longshoreman fell from a boat while with two companions and drowned. His body had not been recovered by nightfall.
Dr Victor Suns berger aged 30 and his brother Max Sunsberger aged 89 from this city drowned today at the Jamaica Bay break water near Canarsie shore. Two other brothers tried to save them but both victims could not swim and waded beyond their depth.
Toledo report details Henry Vetter and his 10 year old son Arthur drowning in a canal near Grand Rapids Ohio. Arthur cramped while swimming and Henry, missing a cork leg, leapt to help but could not regain control. Henry’s body was recovered downstream head downward.
William McDonald aged 28 drowned after diving from a wall in the Pawtucket River his body recovered half an hour later. Earlier, the body of William Booth Jr. drowned in the Blackstone River at Valley Falls was recovered this morning.
The body of William Carlett, a noted fisherman, was recovered in Gloucester Harbor. It is believed he fell from a wharf during the previous night and drowned.
