Wind and lightning caused damage Friday night in Blackwater and Sturmpfield districts with downed trees in Hopkinton. The Morse store in Hillsboro suffered slight damage from a lightning strike. Kingston saw the cornerstone laid for the new seminary by Masons of New Hampshire with aid from Exeter and Kingston lodges. Notable figures including Prof John P. Francis Hamelin and Ulric Dupont two French boys aged 12 and 9 drowned at Holyoke on Saturday. Jay Gould and family arrived in Newport by the Atalanta on Saturday evening, nine hours from New York. They plan to proceed eastward on Monday. The Channing memorial window at Chan ning Memorial Church was dedicated at Sunday's morning service with notable exercises. The congregation was large and the Rev. James Freeman Clarke preached on the text “A sower went forth to sow,” linking it to Dr. Channing’s truths.
Friday fight near an open grave in St Bernard s cemetery linked to New Haven hackmen. Welch operator of Shaws geipe was arrested Saturday in Southington and held on 2500 bail. Thomas Connolly burned by vitriol last week in Southington remains near death in a New Haven hospital. A woman linked to the case has not been arrested though 200 is offered for her capture.
Gen Alfred Aylward, veteran of the Transvaal, ran away with Carrie Van Hoesen of Brooklyn. They eloped after clandestine meetings, were married in Boston the day after a Saratoga trip, and plan to travel to Hong Kong and then Australia. The bride is about 20.
The telegraphic cable connecting Martha's Vineyard with the mainland at Wood's Hall was successfully laid by Western Union. Communication will be established tomorrow and the Sea View house office will reopen. Connection also extends to other island towns by telephone.
In Nashville on July 15 Elijah J Hayes and Ruff McConnell, both youths from near Paris, quarrelled and McConnell fired a pistol, fatally wounding Hayes. McConnell fled toward home but collapsed. investigators note remorse and exhaustion as the cause.

Duluth Minnesota July 14 United States Marshal Brackett of St Paul arrested R C Mitchell proprietor of the Daily Tribune and recently appointed receiver of the United States land office for frauds tied to pre emptions. He acted in collusion with I L Gordon former land office register at St Cloud Minnesota The arrest is seen as a political move to block his receiving the commission.

Special Despatch to the Boston Post from New York July 15 reports Senator Barnett Gibbs returning from Mexico with tales that Gen. Crook exaggerated his victories over Apaches. Valleys residents claim Crook was captured by Indians and freed under a promise to let them return to the reservation without punishment. They allege White Mountain Apaches aided hostiles and even traded with them, including the watch of Judge McComas, bought for $50. Gibbs says unwritten history of the wage era could fill volumes and claims the public has been misled.
The Western Union telegraph operators threaten a possible strike over wages and equal pay. The Brotherhood of Telegraph Operators, led by Boston’s Eugene OConnor, plans action to demand 15 percent higher salaries and end the practice of hiring graduates of telegraphic institutes viewed as rival workers. A nationwide stoppage could occur around July 15 to 19, with impacts estimated at 100000 dollars daily losses for the company.
Cottage City has opened a new Trinity church built by Episcopalians during winter. A full audience attended the first service led by Rev. John J. Roberts of New York with Rev. E. M. Gushe and Rev. A. The Boston Young Men's Christian Union reports its long running aid program providing carriage rides for invalids in suburbia and harbor excursions.
