Democrats praise Rollins’ defeat while Republicans face a scattered field and unresolved outcomes for next week.
The Colored Press Convention at St Louis adopts resolves favoring co education and mixed schools, industrial training for negro youth, land ownership, river navigation protection, and an independent political stance. It encourages suffrage unbound by party, supports tariff positions, and calls for capital capitalizing on education and temperance. Officers elected include Pledges, Scott, Sinclair, Vance, Simpkins, and Simmons. Next meeting slated for Detroit in July 1864.

An unknown man’s body was found near Kill Pond cove in Massachusetts. Worcester resident Nancy McNeale dies of heart disease at 65. Azarine Santarge dies sunstruck in Fall River. An infant dies after scalding. In Newburyport a larceny case sends Charles Popp to 23 months. Taunton men jailed for eight and six months for theft and indecent exposure. Prof. Allen’s collarbone breaks during balloon ascent near Haverhill. Landing at South Hampton, N. H. Druggist Franz Braconier faces liquor sale issues amid licensing questions. Pittsfield grand jury indicts James Barrett for murder in a shooting at his Renfrew saloon. Trial expected in September.

Two New Haven merchants chalk large pictures of trade dollars on sidewalks drawing a complaint to the city attorney who ordered a halt. One merchant named French plans to test his legal right to embellish the sidewalk in front of his store.
New Haven case involving Samuel Holmes who was confined as insane at the almshouse after a habeas corpus writ. Holmes, claimed to be not married to his wife, was discharged as no proper legal examination or return occurred. Names: Holmes, Dr Foster, Dr Lindsley, Selectman Smith, East Haven officials. The matter may prompt false imprisonment action against Selectman Smith.

Robert McDonald arrested for breaking trunk and theft of $50 from Martin S Hall and Edward J Driscoll at rear of 500 Harrison avenue.
The striking messengers of Western Union wish to return to work but the superintendent refuses. They claim they were drawn into a mutiny by a former inspector of the absorbed Western Union District company who led a prior strike by cutting pay to 114 cents per message. They allege he also urged them to incite others in district offices to strike.
In Washington July 13 the Hill investigation resumes with Coleman pressing Folger on attendance promises. The British seek reciprocal inspection treatment for ships. Civil Service Examinations begin Monday with 850 Washington applicants, a colored man setting best time of four hours. The president plans a Dispatch cruise to Newport Cape May and Long Branch.
From San Bernardino, 75 to 80 Chiricahua Indians wait for escort to the reservation. They are armed with rifles and have large herds, likely from raids in Sonora and Chihuahua. They resist surrender until Gen Crock leads reservation affairs. Past agent experience influenced their stance. If control stayed solely with the Indian department, a massacre of whites was feared.
Chicago July 13 inquiry at Dwight finds no details of the sensational farming family murder and suicide story circulating nationwide yesterday. The vague dispatch described a farmer killing his wife and two children before taking his own life, but local reports now give no confirmation. If the tale is a hoax, corrective action is urged.

In Nashville a bank ledger from the state treasurer's office was stolen last night. The ledger contains entries used by prosecutors against former Treasurer Polk. A $250 reward is offered for its return.

Private Duffey transfers from the receiving ship Wabash to the marine barracks at Ports mouth New Hampshire. A small yard police squad continues 12 hour duties with no extra pay and awaits change. Since Monday 11 applicants passed examinations and joined the Marine corps at these barracks. Thursday nine applicants were examined with only two accepted. City officials report police lieutenants will not be appointed for two or three days. Excursion costs for the Continental Guards and National Lancers event totaled 6946.42 dollars, with 2500 dollars to the steamboat company for ride and dinner. Pierce & Co billed 4785.10 dollars, 905 dollars for cigars. Liquors valued at 820.23 dollars were returned, 2964.87 dollars paid.
