Hay sheds burned in Waltham blaze

Waltham July 13 the hay sheds of the George B Pope Lumber Company on Sefton Street were nearly destroyed by fire. A brisk wind fanned the flames and smoke overwhelmed several firefighters. Police put damage near eight thousand dollars. The building measured about 20 feet by 10 feet.

Boy Falls 30 Feet From Window Unharmed

Two year old William Brown of Somerville fell three stories thirty feet from the window of Mrs. Nellie Brent in Medford yesterday afternoon. Patrolman Golden found him uninjured and a doctor said he had no broken bones though frightened. His mother Mrs. Thomas Brown later took him home.

Five delegates to the international convention will be elected by the Boston Telephone Operators' Union on Friday. The large local, with 20 entitled delegates, will send five representatives, marking the first time the union of girls is represented at an electrical workers' international gathering in September in this city.

Engineers Support Boilermakers Strike Reported at Wharf

Coal Hoisting Engineers Union 74 told members to quit work on any wharf where non union boilermakers are sent for repairs. Quitting men report to Agent A J Tighe for immediate action. The union donated 10 to assist striking boilermakers and approved a death benefit plan for members.

Members of Freight Handlers Union 6572 AF of L heard the auditing committee report that $1000 was paid in sick and death benefits over the past six months and that the union’s financial condition is the best since its organization. Installation of officers elected two weeks ago was postponed to July 27.

Will Parade on Labor Day by Coal Teamsters and Handlers

The Coal Teamsters and Handlers' Union 68 voted to parade on Labor Day. President Austin Fales of the Boston A F of L Building Trades Department will be chief marshal. A $10 donation assisted striking boilermakers. Paid vacations with pay were approved for Agent John J. Fenton and associates John R. Lynch and John F. English. A $1 weekly wage increase from Sept. 1 was reported.

No More Spotters On Sanitary Drivers

At Union 149 meeting yesterday Sanitary and Street Cleaning Teamsters discussed the disposal contractor dropping spotters who previously inspected city work. The session focused on plans for the annual picnic July 29 at Caledonian Grove West Roxbury with free admission for children under 12 when accompanied by an adult.

Six children bitten by yellow and black hound on Cottage Street

A large hound bit six children on Cottage Street and Shawsheen Avenue, injuring Robert Rothwell 4 on the right cheek, Edward Allen 13 on the left leg, Richard Maisorim 4 on the upper lip, John Flaherty 8 on the right wrist, Bere Nice Joy 4 on the left cheek and mouth, Helen McGoff 5 on the forehead and right cheek. Neighbors pursued and shots were fired as the dog roamed, then the animal attacked Edward Allen on a piazza before fleeing toward more houses. The boy Rothwell was sent to Massachusetts General Hospital after cauterization.

Man Kills Aggressive Lake Street Hound After Two Girls Bitten

A dog attacked two young girls Helen McGoff and Berenice Joy on Lake Street after bite incidents in the run. A crowd pursued the hound as it dodged a revolver and an armored car. Gate-keeper John B. Pilly clashed with the animal and Edward Haskell joined to strike with a heavy iron coupling pin and a bar, killing the dog after a 15 minute battle and an earlier ten minute struggle. Investigators found no prior sightings and suspect the animal belonged to summer residents at Silver Lake.

Union Boilermakers Strike Across State During Wage Dispute

About 1000 boilermakers walkout over a uniform wage increase request after two months of work stoppage in more than 20 plants. They will meet the State Board of Conciliation and Arbitration this week to seek action and a settlement.
