Hoover's White House release warns that farmers and consumers suffer as food speculators profit from delays in food control. The report foresees a wheat price slump for farmers and escalating undernourishment in major consuming centers unless strong government action is taken immediately.
Quote attributed to Mr. Hoover laments current gaps in safety for farmers and consumers. He argues that without pending legislation, protection remains insufficient and risks persist for both groups.
Philip De Breze found his wife age 27 and two daughters aged 3 and 1 dead in a gas filled room in Manchester. The gas jet was open and police suspect a suicide by the wife. A note near the bodies asked that the children be buried beside her. De Breze offered no reason for the tragedy.
Washington July 10 A bill introduced by Representative Rankin would grant federal allowances to dependent wives and children of all soldiers during the war. Wives with no children would receive 30 dollars a month. one child 45 dollars. two children 60 dollars. more than two 75 dollars.
Washington telegram from the Prince of Udine reports the Italian mission has arrived safely in France on its way back to Italy after a visit to the United States. The message was received tonight confirming the mission's status.
Washington report notes a substitute food control bill aimed at banning beer and wine production by extending prohibition during the war. The measure would give the President power to decide extending prohibition to beer and wine and to halt imports of distilled liquors without government stock purchases. Aimed to overcome opposition to the Chamberlain bill and push a vote on July 21.

COPENHAGEN July 10 German imperial chancellor von Bethmann Hollweg retains the Kaiser's confidence amid internal dissensions. Despatches say the Kaiser will sacrifice two cabinet members, Foreign Minister Zimmermann and Vice-Chancellor Helfferich, and the chancellor has promised Reichstag members that he will consent to their resignations. Five Prussian cabinet members will also be asked to quit.
In a dramatic rescue at Revere Beach, Miss Florence Watson of Beverly Street, Revere, nearly drowned as rescuers led by Charlie Brickley and Thomas Farley pulled her from a lethal undertow. Officer William H. Brown and others assisted as hundreds watched the life risking effort unfold.
A rescue at East Boston faced delays due to no life preserver nearby and a tangled rope. A just-painted boat was found after minutes and used to save two boys and several men including Farley Brickley and Officer Brown. Witnesses urged more lifebelts and swift boat access with guards along the beach.
Officially nine five percent of local and district military exemption boards have been organized. Officials expect the entire exemption system to be ready by week’s end. Indications point to drawing of men for the National Army beginning soon after the final board reports ready.

After a day of disruption, hundreds of guests at the citys 16 largest hotels learned the waiters strike was settled. Managers agreed waiters would get one paid day off weekly instead of biweekly and that union men should be employed where possible, with nonunion hires allowed if competent union help is unavailable.

East St Louis July 10. A coroner's inquest hears a juror say Illinois guardsmen shot and killed two Negroes on orders from a police sergeant. Colonel B E Clayton testified to the incident but declined comment.
Search of all New England cities was started yesterday to find Vivian Forbes and Walter W Keene of Milford who disappeared July 1. Forbes is 17, Keene 18. Their parents had refused permission to marry. Forbes is an only child and her mother is prostrated.
The four hotels Bellevue Boston Tavern Thorndike and Puritan did not reach an early evening agreement on open restaurants and cafes. Union leaders expect settlements with these hotels today. The Somerset Copley Plaza Lenox Touraine Westminster Essex Adams House Parker House and Young's Hotel aligned with the demands for one day off in seven and union recognition with broad membership under the Whipple system. Young's and Parker House were not struck yesterday but their waiters will receive the same terms as at the Touraine.
