The mayor denounces the union's actions aimed at advancing the Waivine Storrow elevated project and warns Carmen to beware of counsel Vahey, signaling political maneuvering and legal concerns.
Ernest G. Bennett of Dorchester faces his cousin Susan McLaughlin of Malden in Malden Court over alleged marriage coercion. McLaughlin previously took bichloride of mercury in a love motive. Bennett says he will not marry her and will fight the case to the end.
Bennett vows to go to jail before marrying Miss McLaughlin amid a Dorchester court case. Miss Welch is Bennett’s other balking sweetheart, while Miss McLaughlin clings to future marriage plans and preserves letters as potential evidence for Judge Bruce.
In Superior Court five Stearns descendants petition to halt the planned distribution of Mrs. Arcadia Baker’s 7 million dollar estate. They contend Abel Stearns left nearly 1 million in non community property in 1871 and that heirs hold only a trust interest. They warn current administrators risk loss but propose a plan to conserve the estate for all involved.
Congress will investigate the long running conflicts between labor and capital. The Senate lobby committee, in executive session, decided to inquire into the wars over the past decade and the efforts by both sides to shape legislation in their favor.
Samuel Gompers will appear before the committee on July 25. A subpena was issued for John Mitchell former UMW head and AFL vice president. The committee also subpoenas George Pope NA Manufacturers president and J P Bird general manager. Continued on Page 10-5th Column.
Howard Willetts of New York filed with County Treasurer Brewster a claim of $1075 for the killing of 31 Dorset sheep including one ram and damage to the flock at his New Marlboro property. The incident is the largest claim of its type against the county. Initial reports suggested a bear or wild cats from the Green mountains may have raided the sheep fold.
The king of Roumania has declared war on Bulgaria. The Roumanian minister at Sofia has been recalled. A Sofia Times correspondent reports the announcement issued early this morning.
Boston sports fans are assured that Bill Carrigan will become the next manager of the Boston Red Sox, despite public denials of any rift between manager Jake Stahl and President McAleer. The announcement ends speculation over internal differences and signals a smooth transition for the world champions.
The article argues Carrigan’s appointment seems certain and notes team apathy and poor on field effort all season. Since April the champions have shown a damaging slump provoking nationwide comment and calls for leadership change.

Policeman T. M. Kelliher of East Dedham Street Station pulled 2-year-old Samuel Cohen from the fountain basin at Blackstone Square after the child fell in. The narrowest possible water escape was recorded in Boston yesterday.
A policeman in the square heard cries from a crowd and retrieved a baby from the fountain basin. The mother and women from the park rushed to the scene. The child was taken to a Shawmut avenue physician and suffered only a bad wetting with no serious harm.
The arbitration between the Elevated and its Carmen's Union employees shifts into a public feud. Mayor Fitzgerald criticizes James H. Vahey counsel for the Carmen's Union and on the arbitration board, and also targets James J. Storrow. The mayor questions Vahey's character and urges other interests to see his true nature.
At a meeting at 724 Washington Street Carmen's Union executive board prepared a reply to the mayor's statement. Mr Vahey, present at the meeting, chose not to reply personally and the union's officials read their prepared response. Continued on Page 10-2d Column.
President Wilson and companions started near 4 PM for a long motor tour along the Connecticut River toward Springfield New Hampshire but tangled routes and fading daylight forced them to circle back. They reached home at 8 PM an hour late for dinner.
