Escape in a Dory From Deer Island
At about 6 o'clock last night William Smith a 34 year old Black man and William McMahan 64 sentenced for drunkenness for a year escaped in a dory from Deer Island. They had worked at Galloupe's Island and found a new dory near the quarantine hospital. They rowed off while harbor police later sighted a vessel with two men in a new dory headed for Quincy but did not overtake them.

Duxbury Bicycle Trekker Returns to San Francisco
Martin Duxbury arrived in San Francisco after crossing the continent on a bicycle starting from Providence Rhode Island. He rode 650 miles in six and a half days from Kansas City to Denver met travelers crossing the world in Denver then crossed the desert to Salt Lake City and rode from Ogden to Reno on railroad tracks before reaching Oakland. He will stay until July 25 then begin a return trip to New York by the shortest route.
