Rickard Details How He Buncoed Bidders for Jeffries Fight
SAN FRANCISCO July 8 Tex Rickard, the promoter of last Monday's Jeffries Johnson contest at Reno, in an interview here today makes sensational disclosures of how the big contest was arranged. He declares that two days before bidding he had Johnson and Jeffries signed through Berger, and no other promoter could get the fight. He says he offered Johnson a $10,000 bonus and made him think Jeffries was worse. He notes Jeffries thought Gleason would partner. Rickard says bids were opened but all were cinched, and he had to put up $22,000 with Stakeholder Bob Murphy and lend Johnson $2,600. The purse was cut 75 to 1, then adjusted to 49 and 60 between the principals. The house paid $270,775. they still own one-sixth of the moving pictures. He predicts profits from the pictures and asserts no ordinance can stop showings in San Francisco. He blames crooked politicians and criticizes the city. R. L. C.-Fitzsimmons won the title from Corbett in 1897. Jack Johnson will be credited with a knockout in the Jeffs fight.
