In a brief period a fierce storm caused widespread destruction across western Massachusetts towns. Six inches of rain fell in spots, uprooting trees, tearing roofs, and severing telephone and telegraph lines. Lightning struck houses, washouts blocked roads, and communication was cut off as streets became impassable.
A severe storm battered Holyoke and surrounding towns causing heavy damage. Lightning, rain, and wind felled trees, unroofed and burned houses, and disrupted rail and telephone networks. Wilbraham suffered a church fire and a man was killed by lightning in Indian Orchard. Westfield timber loss and isolated traffic were reported. tobacco crops largely escaped damage.
Dr. William L. Cowles of 101 Newbury street and three guests from Bridgeport Conn. were hurt when their auto ran into a tree on Commonwealth avenue boulevard West Newton. The car somersaulted, skidding bark from the tree. Injured: Dr Cowles internal injuries. J Johnson Williams Wilmington NC arm and back injuries. G M Muchmore 137 Pembroke street Boston cuts. Several witnesses rushed to help the injured after a trolley crash near a tree. Chief Mitchell arrived with an ambulance and arranged hospital transport. Mr Williams, the most seriously hurt, was taken to Newton Hospital in the chief’s car. others followed by ambulance. Dr Cowles cited steering gear failure as the cause and noted the road was fine.
In Westville New Hampshire on July 5 a 17 year old, Paul Belanger, swam across Peaslee’s Pond to pull two women a man and a boy from a drowning hole. His friend Theodore N Fonteau Jr 21 waited in water to take each victim. Belanger collapsed after saving all four.
A fire at the Sonja State Prison for the Criminal Insane in Grand Rapids Michigan tonight destroyed a bakery and spread to the hospital tailor shop dining room and kitchen. Prisoners created a loud scene with cries as flames raged beyond the prison fire department.
New York City metropolitan district records 36 heat deaths by midnight with 123 heat prostrations in Manhattan and the Bronx. A patrolman collapsed on his East Side beat and died in hospital, and a Morrisania jail inmate died in custody. A Bronx two year old fell from a fire escape, dying from exposure.
Danville Virginia July 5 George Clark risked his life to save his dog from an oncoming Southern railway train. He remained clear of the track then rushed back to rescue the animal and was struck by the engine. He died an hour later in a hospital. The dog was killed beneath the wheels.
Heat wave claims 84 lives as city endures 95 degree high. Thousands seek shade and water, many sleeping outdoors. Forecasters say relief will be scant today though showers may bring brief relief later. Officials urge precautions across all neighborhoods and workplaces.
Residents faced a fourth day of extreme heat as Boston and suburbs endured record heat and mass prostrations. The toll climbed to 41 in Greater Boston and 43 beyond, with hundreds more affected as hospitals strained under the influx of heat victims.
