Prrrssure July 1 coal miners in the first and second pools on the Monongahela River strike for 3 cents per bushel. Miners in the third and fourth pools remain at work but expect to join the walkout soon. About 2500 men idle.

Utica New York July 1 sales on the Utica cheese market totaled 1385 boxes at 8 cents 8550 at 84 cents 2160 at 84 cents 1324 at 8% cents 2414 at 84ac 1264 at 853 cents GO0 at 834 cents and 2190 on commission prices similar to last week with firmer tone. Little Falls saw an advance of 4 cents with sales 363 boxes at 8 cents 4518 at 814 cents 3950 at 8% cents 1028 at 8% cents 991 on private terms 615 on commission 825 farm dairy sold at 84 6% cents and two packages at 16 17 cents.
Coroner Mix finds fault lies with Assistant Trackmaster Shields and his crew who left rails unchanged after repair. Train ran over the road before finishing work. Coroner will seek a warrant for Shields from State Attorney Doolittle.
Ninont Rhode Island July 1 A schooner Buffo Wilbur of St John from Fall River for St John ran ashore in fog on Beaver Tail at the south end of Cenanicut Island. The vessel is high on rocks and bilged with holes. The crew and one passenger are safe. A local tug could not assist. The crew is stripping the schooner and it will be a total loss. The bell buoy off Castle Hill was damaged and is not working.
A Denver dispatch reports a rapid Durango, Colorado fire ignited in the south part of the city. Winds drove flames through half the town, destroying eight business blocks, three churches and portions of residences. Loss estimated at 800000 with light insurance. origin suspected incendiary.
In Savannah on July 1 A J Miller Co furniture on Broughton Street burned. J T Cohen dry goods M Sternberg jewelry and L E Byeck dry goods also destroyed. Total loss about 150000 with stock and insurance figures detailed. Front wall collapsed burying firefighters. J T Webbrs of Protection hose company killed and eight injured.
A fire at 96 North Street occupied by Dee Bros fur niture dealers began at 12 45 this morning on the fourth floor from spontaneous combustion. At 1 15 Box 16 reported a blaze at Carter and McAuley harness shop Union and Friend streets, lower floor used by F Dillingham paper goods with $75 total damage. A further 1 30 alarm from Box 126 hit an unoccupied wooden building No 4 Third Street Court South Boston owned by Harriet Gray with $25 damage.
The governor urges authorities and citizens to prevent the Sullivan Kilrain prize fight within Mississippi and vows action under the 1882 law. A $500 reward is offered for Sullivan and Kilrain’s arrest and delivery to county officers if Mississippi becomes the battleground.
The Third Artillery changes its summer encampment to Fort Monroe in September with individual target practice possible in the meantime. Despatch from Philadelphia reports that about thirty thousand Reading railroad workers left labor organizations in the past year, including over twentyfive thousand miners from Reading Coal and Iron. The mass desertion follows the companys ultimatum to sever ties with unions as a condition of continued employment, effectively ending organized labor within the system. President Austin Corbin earlier issued an edict demanding renunciation of the Knights of Labor and threatened to refuse employment to any member.
Creditors of C J Kershaw & Co tied to Cincinnati men in the 1887 Chicago Board of Trade wheat corner met and endorsed a report alleging a designed multi broker scheme to push wheat high then crash prices.
