The Church of the Messiah in Roxbury District was consecrated with imposing ceremonies led by Rt. Rev. Benjamin H. Paddock. Fifteen clergymen attended, and the sermon was delivered by Bishop Paddock. The building, financed by Joseph Story Fay, cost about $60,000 and features local granite, rich interior finish, and gifts from numerous donors including Mrs. Marion Foster and Mr. and Mrs. J. S. Fay Jr.

The Hon Ephraim B Patch aged 83 died of paralysis at his daughter’s Chelmsford home yesterday. A Lowell resident for sixty years he was born December 24 1806 in Ashby. A lawyer in Boston son George P Lawrence and daughter Mrs A B Homer survive. Patch engaged in dry goods and later auction and real estate work for decades and served as senator from Lowell in 1859. He chaired school committees and assessors and led the North Middlesex Unitarian Association and the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. He was widely honored and respected as a public citizen.
A disastrous wreck near Lynchburg Va on the Norfolk & Western rail killed an estimated 25 to 30, with many wounded. A washout, eight to ten feet of water, undermined the track as a train ran at about thirty miles per hour. Officials refuse to provide details. Several killed included engineer Pat Donovan and postal clerk J J Rose. Major J C Cassell and others were injured. A relief train and physicians were dispatched from Lynchburg.
Waterbury July 2 Freight cars derailment blocks the Naugatuck line two miles below Seymour with eleven loaded cars derailed causing delays on all passenger trains. A brakeman John Hutchins was thrown into a tree but escaped with minor injuries. Also reports a late Sunday Texan express wreck near Terrell left one dead and several injured as a bridge failed. Baltimore service to Washington disrupted as floods wash away fifty yards of track.

Mose Alabama July 2 Sheriff Holcombe reports a governor's order to forbid the Sullivan Kilrain prize fight in Mobile County calling it a felony and promising to cover extra costs. Birmingham dispatch says Mobile County will deploy guards and block trains at the state line if fighters approach.
Winnipeg July 2 The Burke hearing resumed at 11 AM but little was done before 1 PM as Burke's counsel fought to admit Chicago grand jury evidence. Objections, all technical, were repeatedly overruled by the court while the original copies arrived with Assistant Attorney Baker.
