A blizzard threatens Boston after tying up the West from Nebraska to Minnesota and nearing the Pittsburg district of Pennsylvania. Strong southwesterly winds suggest a cold blast reaching Boston within 24 hours.
Forecaster Smith ordered a southeast storm warning across New England as thousands in Boston faced conditions from the mild fall snow. The Boston Weather Bureau barometer remained low throughout yesterday.
A severe snowstorm on January 29 cut telegraph service west and north of Chicago. Poles and miles of wire fell, halting communication with Northwest points and between Chicago, St. Paul, and Milwaukee. Railroads report some trouble but no major train breakdowns. Rock Island wires were lost and several train whereabouts unknown.

At the Newburyport factory of George W Richardson Co workers were trapped by flames in a third story room. 50 workers jumped to the ground as fire and smoke filled the area. three injured men remain in Anna Jacques Hospital and 150 people lost jobs. Firemen also injured. damage estimated at 20000 dollars.
A massive blaze gutted a three story factory with only the frame standing. The fire began in a cellulose room on the third floor suggesting spontaneous combustion as the ignition source. Fire crews fought the flames as the building burned hot.

A reform plan proposes a nine member council replacing existing bodies, elimination of primaries and party designations, appointment of a Governor chosen Finance Commission, and a four year mayoral term with recall after two years. It imposes fines and imprisonment for councilors and department heads overstepping funds, abolishes several city offices, allows women to sign nominating papers, and sets the 1910 election date with contracts over 1000 to be bid publicly.

Oakleigh Thorne president of the Trust Company of America told the Senate judiciary committee that merging Tennessee Coal & Iron with United States Steel was unnecessary for his bank's safety. He said Steel Trust officials told Roosevelt such a merger was essential to prevent a panic and implied Roosevelt was used in the absorption scheme. George W. Perkins denied involvement.
Senate judiciary committee questioned Oakleigh Thorne and George W. Perkins in an executive session on the Tennessee Coal & Iron merger with United States Steel. Thorne denied Trust Company of America owning TC I stock but said loans were made collateralized and later repaid. He admitted membership in a 1907 syndicate that controlled TCI stock, later stating he sold his shares and did not know the syndicate's operations.
