Overflow gatherings fill 25 church groups as Rev J Wilbur Chapman leads a large evangelistic drive. The third night drew bigger crowds than the first two as evangelists from across the country report unprecedented citywide preparation and foresee a major spiritual awakening.
Thousands flocked to Tremont Temple and Central Congregational Church yesterday to hear Dr. Chapman preach and Mr. Alexander sing. Last night at Tuynn there was a repetition of the services from the previous evening.
In Twavana on January 28 Governor Magoon sailed with Cuba now self-governed. He left 2,860,668 dollars in the treasury to launch the new republic’s business. Gomez serves as president as Cuba assumes autonomy.
The island formerly under American control since the 1906 revolution formally shifts to native Cuban leadership. Alfredo Zayas becomes Vice President in a brief ceremony. The inauguration of the President at the palace is likewise brief with a large crowd and diplomats in attendance. General Gomez appears on the palace balcony as the oath is administered by the chief justice.
Washington January 28 The Navy Department opened bids to locate a wireless tower in Washington to communicate with ships at sea up to 3000 miles distant The system must transmit reliably through all seasons to a radius of 8000 miles in a navigable direction from Washington Seven firms bid with National Electric Signalling Company of Pittsburgh offering equipment and tower for 82600 dollars
Representative Peters of Massachusetts introduces a bill to require wireless telegraph on all ocean-going steamers carrying over 59 passengers and traveling between ports more than 190 miles distant. The rule would apply to foreign and coastwise ships but not to schooners and barges.
Five Harvard students escaped serious harm when an auto owned by I T Frelinghuysen of Tuxedo New York collided with a delivery wagon on Massachusetts avenue Cambridge near the Harvard bridge around 2 AM. The occupants were thrown to the street. injuries varied. The injured include Howard Gallatin Pell Clarence Crimmins Stanley Fargo and I C Wellman.
Two fishing boats docked at Gloucester port with exhausted sailors saved from the Georges Panks area. Natalie J. Nelson and Ida J. Silva brought in crews including John Burke John Thomas and George Riley after being cut off by a dense tug and lost from the schooners Benjamin FF and Washakie.
Boston Transit Commission chair George G. Crocker urged a cross-town subway linking the Tremont street line at Park street with the Washington street tunnel and the South station to be built under Winter and Summer streets. He said reintroducing elevated trains to Tremont street subway would be impractical and Henry C. Brine argued for elevated trains back in the subway for nearby business interests.
Henry C. Long chaired a meeting on transit prospects noting past proposals to connect the Washington street tunnel with the South station. Speakers urged reconstructing Tremont street subway and expanding rapid transit, citing lost service after the Washington street tunnel opened and a $9,000,000 expenditure by Boston residents.
At Fitchburg January 29 a trustees committee hearing the charges against Burbank Hospital nurses adjourned to next week. Two nurses Miss Caroline M Miller and Miss Claire Lemay were suspended after testimony last night. A 19 year old patient, Miss Margaret Cannon, testified conditions she witnessed were dire. The proceedings included allegations of patient drugging and immorality among staff.
City auditor reported Mayor Hibbard used 50 601 88 for office expenses in 1908 surpassing the appropriation by 601 83. The report shows heavy spending on salaries 24 114 39 the largest annual total for office salaries and 2 581 75 for carriage and travel expenses with further large items for stationery stenographic work entertaining guests and a municipal automobile.
Near relatives and former patients demand full open hearings as investigations unfold into alleged neglect and morphine use at Surbank Hospital. Witnesses including Mrs. Fred Tr. Cote and three nurses testify on alleged abuses and the push to make the hospital a city institution.
While visiting Mt Hope Cemetery in West Roxbury an unknown man about 55 years old suffered a heart attack at the grave side. He refused medical help and died within minutes. The Salvation Army asks Governor Draper to amend the veterans' preference act to allow important police appointments without restriction. It states that Salvation Army and related groups must stop street solicitations as they violate the law. It notes two fifths of arrests are non residents and about half of drunkenness arrests involve non residents, and that enforcement costs for automobile laws exceed fines by 22 326 dollars.
In his third annual report Police Commissioner O Meara protests the veterans act and sums up a clash with Governor Draper over deputy superintendent appointments. He argues for flexibility to place the best officers, while five captains seek promotion after Deputy Coulter's death and the commissioner worries over future leadership in emergencies.
