He said his government would continue to study protection policy and noted Canada’s reciprocal trade gains with the United States were won by conservatives and allied governments. He urged expanding trade fairly without altering the national policy.

The second semi annual meeting of the Retail and Wholesale Marble Dealers Association of New England and the Provinces was held at the American House. A reception ran from 11 to 12, then a business session while ladies enjoyed music and recitations. President Stephen Mosler of Hartford was absent due to illness and sent a resignation letter. Vice President William G. Gannon of Manchester presided. membership increased and a balance of 180.25 was reported. The group voted to shift annual meetings to January and to hold July in Rutland Vermont. Officers named include E. H. Kavanagh president, J. Brennan secretary treasurer, and multiple vice presidents and directors from each region. About 160 attendees joined the dinner at 2 pm with speeches following.
The British steamer Macedonia bound for Hampton Roads from Philadelphia collided with a three masted schooner ten miles off the Delaware Capes and sank her. The captain’s son drowned and the captain was badly injured. Macedonia continued to Philadelphia at 5 am with survivors aboard. The Macedonia’s bow was stove in.
Shipping notices list arrivals in Boston and New York with vessels from Glasgow Progreso Stetlin Liverpool Mexico Havana Liverpool Palermo and Baltimore. Hamburg hosts Marsala and Slavonia from New York and Baltimore while Queenstown welcomes Caspian from Baltimore bound for Liverpool. St Japes from Liverpool Burgundia from Mediterranean ports Also noted are Po wan Powhatan and other steamers arriving in January.
London Jan 28 Chancellor Goschen told Leeds Chamber of Commerce solid trade is preferable to a prelude of boom and bust. He urged restraint on foreign tariffs and cautioned against quarrels with foreign rivals while backing banking schemes to bolster permanent resources and avoid reliance on foreign aid. He warned against excessive fiduciary currency and favored strong banking safeguards.
Loxpon January 29 The Daily News declares that rumors of Mr Gladstone's retirement are entirely without foundation.
In Belfast a Sexton supporters meeting devolved into chaos as Healyite and Parnellite opponents clashed. Reporters were barred, police faced a mob outside, and a large majority adopted a vote of confidence in Mr Sexton. London commentary by Justin McCarthy urged patience and unity, while Irish party factions planned separate amendments to the Land Bill.
In London on January 28, J A Duncan urged parliamentary action over British Chilean interests as merchants pressed for Gov’t attention. Edmund Robertson moved to redefine conspiracy, limiting criminality to criminal objects and restricting intimidation to breach of peace. The Solicitor-General warned such changes would empower strikers and enable boycotting. Robertson’s motion failed 179 to 143.
Paris dispatches report a French squadron is being directed toward Chile as revolutionary events unfold in Valparaiso. The Exchange Telegraph notes favorable Chilean news, citing Balmaceda’s possible resignation and mediation by the British minister, with details arriving via Mexico after yesterday’s revolutions.
Montreal January 28 the ninth annual Club National banquet at Windsor Hotel drew 600 guests. Hon Mercier and Laurier spoke on unrestricted reciprocity with the United States as Liberal policy, criticizing Conservative ties to the U.S. and urging a clear program for trade. The event was hailed as the year’s greatest Liberal demonstration.
In Waltham on January 28 a Park Theatre Charity Ball drew more than 200 couples. Governor Russell attended with staff, toured the American watch factory, and was hosted by Congressman elect Sherman Hoar. The evening featured a grand march led by Col Ephraim Stearns, ample dancing, supper at 11, and boxes occupied by the Governor and party until their 10:40 train back to Boston.
In Tacoma Washington January 28 a sensational bribery claim emerges as Representative Frame from Shonomish County says he was offered 1000 3000 and 5000 to back Senator Squire. He will testify before the Investigating Committee. Representative Hutchinson recounts a bribe offer to vote for Squire but plans to jail for contempt. Senator Long cites two senators who reportedly received a 2000 check and one who tore it up, another who kept pieces as evidence.
Harvard's athletic association adopts a graduate advisory committee for track athletics. Members named are E. J. Wendell, George Morrison, and George Mandell, former college track athletes. The committee will advise on governance and training of the Mott Haven team, reflecting a trend to involve graduates with active athletic interest. In addition, today marks the annual day of prayer for schools and colleges with services scheduled across the university and a Y.M.C.A. prayer service in the evening.
New York reports Postmaster Van Cott says Boston mail delays are resolved. The morning Boston mail now moves by Grand Central Station trains at 6 a.m. starting February, with railway post office clerks handling it in transit to speed up city delivery, especially in foggy weather.
A cable message from New York reports the Brazilian syndicate continued to buy rubber mainly in Paris and prices have advanced five and a half cents a pound for Upper River fine ruber.
General Boynton testified before the Silver Pool Investigating Committee that he sent a message to Dunnell of the New York Times about Dingley and Payne denying knowledge of the Cameron testimony. The hearing revealed whispered exchanges and regret over the timing of the Cameron disclosures, with Dockery, Stevens, and others detailing attempts to delay or influence the testimony. The committee adjourned to continue tomorrow.
Loxpon Jan 28 reports multiple weddings. Miss Haller Horwitz marries Claude Ponsonby at Ascot with a crowded church and elaborate dress. The couple heads to Cairo after a dejeuner at Heatherfield. Other weddings include Minat Hal and Jacob Myers in Minat Hal, Wilkins Emerson in Wakefield, Mulliken and Miss Fennesy in Newton, and Maude Foster and Hayward French in Chelsea with receptions, trousseaus, and large guest lists.
Army and Navy Gazette reports Brig Gen William A Hammond US Army retired will travel to Fort Monroe Virginia to testify as a witness before a general court martial. Also listed are cadet transfers and promotions at West Point Grove City College and the University of South Dakota with sailors assigned to ships and coast survey duties.
New York report on the second day of Senator Stanford's Palo Alto trotting stock sale at the American Institute building. Bidders grow as Electioneer descendants top prices, with a highest bid of 7500 for a daughter of Electioneer. Forty four head sold, total around 49500, and notable exhibitors from Boston, Lexington, and Philadelphia observed. withdrawals and catalog changes stirred expectations for the remainder of the sale.
Concord N H Jan 28 bills to raise capital stock of Boston and Maine and Concord and Montreal railroads were made special orders for Tuesday with amendments to be printed. Heath of Manchester may propose auctioning the increase and dedicating proceeds to the companies. A large lobby seeks regulation of assessment and bond companies and to bring them under insurance supervision.
The United States Board of General Appraisers ruled on a goat hair classification under the Oct 1 1890 tariff act. The decision upholds the St Albans Vermont collector’s duty of 12 cents per pound under paragraph 377 of schedule Ik.
