The junior press members at Yale were elected editors of the Yale Literary Magazine this afternoon. Named are John N. Pomeroy of San Francisco California William Kent of San Rafael California Andrew F. Gates of Lebanon Connecticut Charles K Ludington of New York City and William Phelps of New Haven Connecticut.
A large force of sheriffs and Pittsburg officers fought with up to fifty strikers at Mt Pleasant’s Alice and Mutual works. Thirteen men and one woman were jailed after hand to hand combat. one Hungarian reportedly killed and several injured. Citizens arm themselves as violence spreads to Donnelly Diamond works.
The Clothing Cutters Union held a large meeting at New Era Hall in Tremont street. President John T. Kealey announced that many manufacturers agreed to pay the union schedule for 1886, while Louis Cohen Myers Andrews and C S Marston refused and the matter was referred to shop cutters to pressure nonconformers. Seventeen new members joined the union and a seventeen member committee was appointed to study convict labor legislation. The next meeting is scheduled for one week from last evening.
Charles II Reynolds about 60 was struck in his wagon by a train on the Providence Warren and Bristol railway at Nayarit station this afternoon and killed. The horse was killed and the wagon wrecked. Reynolds leaves a widow and several children.
The adjourned inquest in the Marshfield dike explosion case reopened before Judge Damon this morning. The day was filled with testimony revealing key facts. The inquest adjourned for one week with the aviance 18 withheld pending further action.
The fifth annual ensilage congress convened in New York with about 200 delegates from across the United States. Edward Atkinson of Boston opened the session, followed by G. C. Smith of St. Albans Vermont.
Knights of Labor officials pressured William G. S. Keene to meet demands or face a nationwide boycott. If no settlement within four hours occurs, the executive board will seek actions against Keene and all his business partners, including barber shops laundries grocers and other merchants dealing with the Keenes and Spinney goods.
The Spinners Union may push for higher wages at Friday’s meeting. Fall River manufacturers watch New Bedford agitation, fearing a strike may move there. The print cloth market remains strong with a stock table showing total stock rising from 947,000 in 1886 to 1,025,000 in October 1885 and an average weekly stock change of 45,000, with 1377,000 contracted for future Fall delivery.
A Canterbury petition to the General Assembly requests reparation for Prudence Phillies formerly Prudence Crandall for injuries caused in 1833 by local citizens due to her free school for black girls. The case recalls Crandall’s early anti slavery clashes, arrest, and jail, as discussed in Henry Wilson’s Rise and Fall of the Slave Power.
Pittsfield Mass January court convicts David Lahey of burning Deputy Sheriff Cobb of West Stockbridge barns as revenge after Cobb had earlier arrested him. Sentenced to five years in state prison.
NortH Conway New Hampshire January 20 Wendall Foss moved from Ossipee jail to Brownfield Maine by Sheriff Stacy after governor Currier granted a requisition Foss is charged in the murder of Harvell A Wentworth authorities report.
J. N. Green shields and E. H. Gots Canadian counsel return from Ottawa where a deputy minister of justice interview occurred. Extradition papers are before the lieutenant-governor after being routed to the British minister in Washington and then to the governor-general.
The Berkshire Life Insurance Company held its annual meeting in Pittsfield Mass today. Reports show assets of 3 796 177 dollars and a largely increased business during the year. The old board of officers was re elected.
The hull, cargo and all belonging to the wreck of schooner Isaac Carlton at Fourth Cliff were sold today at private sale to Eleazer P. Dunbar of Boston and E. P. Cock of Wellfleet.
An unknown man about 25 at Revere Junction was struck by a 9:30 train and died en route to hospital. He carried a pay envelope with the name R. Walsh and the number 249. He was taken to the North Grove street morgue. description notes about 5 7, dark complexion, brown gray eyes, dark clothes, black derby hat.
In Fall River Massachusetts on January 20 secretary How ard of the Spinners Union and a striker committee met the mill superintendent and overseer over the Bourne mill strike. The mill offered pay on the existing basis with a new price list ready but not announced due to the strike. Spinners would return if pay method changed but all strikers could not be rehired. Two knobsticks worked today with thirteen other helpers. thirteen of sixteen male spinners were at work. The committee demanded dismissal of knobsticks and full rehiring, which was refused. Strikers voted to stay out until all could be taken back. The case will be reviewed at Friday’s union meeting.
South Yarmouth Mass Jan 20 The three masted schooner Theresa ashore at Bass River has settled in the sand nearly eight feet. Wreckers efforts to float her will probably be discontinued.
Indications from Washington at 1 a m warn of warmer but cloudy conditions across New England with possible rain or snow. Winds shift from easterly to southerly as barometer falls. cautionary signals issued from Hatteras to Boston.
SAVANNAH GA JAN 20 Minda Campbell died at age 94 in Savannah She was the mother of Tom Simms the fugitive slave whose 1850 Boston trial sparked great excitement and influenced the ruling upholding the fugitive slave law validity.
About 9000 cigar makers and other employes are idle as Levy Bros workers refuse to declare a strike against a new uniform price list and return to work. Employers unite to resist. packers in most shops finish stock today and walk out tonight. by tomorrow all packers may join the strike as it extends to cigar box work.
About thirty long epinpers and back boys in the Readville cotton mill Hyde Park strike for a 10 percent raise. Their action affects about 200 workers willing to work. A 19.3 percent wage cut was made Jan 1 1855 and hours cut to ten since. Proprietors warn if men do not return the mills will shut for repairs about three months.
In Hopkinton Massachusetts on January 20 the dispute between manufacturers and employees over prices is settled with a one year price scale. The new list takes effect immediately and officials express confidence that a strike is unlikely. The boot trade is highly prosperous in Hopkinton.
There are no new developments in the Sterling Rubber Company strike. Many Boston workers went in to work but strikers persuaded most to return to the city. A Knights of Labor committee is rumored to seek a settlement tomorrow.
The president sent Charles J. Canda of New York’s nomination to the Senate for assistant treasurer in New York City. The Wall Street figure, long tied to Samuel J. Tilden and William G. Ogden interests, has held railroad and finance roles including director of the Elevated, president of Ohio Central, and treasurer of the Democratic National Committee. He says he is ready to serve upon confirmation.
Boston detectives Innes and Thodes arrive in Montreal and express confidence in capturing McNeil soon. The Lancaster National Bank in Rutland Vermont sees Alfred Page as temporary president pro tem overseeing affairs. Receiver Corcoran appointed in Lancaster case. hearing for cashier Forrester likely postponed as witnesses attend Worcester grand jury.
Captain Leonard G. Sheppard and Captain George R. Slicer arrived in NEPort to probe the collision between the revenue cutter Dexter and the Pilgrim liner. They heard the crews’ reports and adjourned to answer questions, with findings to Washington. The Dex ter will head to New York for a new mast.
Worcester meeting for the Massachusetts State Agricultural Society chose vice presidents R K E Burgess F A Bliss and Nathan Edson from Nantucket Rehoboth and Barnstable. The ninety eighth annual communication of the Connecticut Masonic Grand Lodge convened in Hartford with about seventy lodges represented. Grand Master Dwight Waugh delivered the annual address detailing the year’s business and noting most judges in excellent condition, with only one or two in strict fitness.
The Veteran Fusilier Association met at Crawford House last evening with Captain Frank H. Ward presiding. A committee to represent the group at the New York convention on January 27 to form a national veteran association was completed, and bylaws amendment was acted upon. A large attendance of old Fastberg members attended as they reviewed the centennial anniversary program.
Ex Councilman W H H Emmons and Associate Justice Dwyer are listed as candidates for the East Boston District Court judgeship. Councilman Erskine will again bring before the council the Chelsea street speeding issue, opposed by Ward 1 residents including 1600 children who rely on the street daily and praised Councilman Sullivan’s prior stance against the measure.
Hartford announces the death of Mrs Mary Hooker Burton wife of Henry E Burton and daughter of Mr John Hooker and Mrs Isabella Beecher Hooker in the city today.

After-dinner reminiscences of the war and songs followed.
The first half of the Highland assembly of the hat makers and finishers branch of the Knights of Labor was held at Paine Memorial Hall last evening with participation by 200 couples. Music by the St. James orchestra. Floor directors were John J. Gibbes and James Gaffney, assisted by John F. Charles H. Reed of New York filed a printed brief with the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania seeking a rehearing and reargu ment in Milton Weston’s case. Weston is serving five years for voluntary manslaughter. sentence imposed by Allegheny County Court and sustained by the Supreme Court, which stayed proceedings until the 26th for filing and consideration of the petition.
Captain Waters returned to Newport aboard the schooner Alen Greene ashore at Point Judith. Edwin J Hobbs who was awaiting sentence for poisoning food in the June term 1885 at the Charles street jail cut his throat with a razor last Friday and died from the wounds Monday, per the superior court record.
Messia C. B. Whitten of Portland Maine and Kirk D. Pierge attorney of Halsboro New Hampshire visited Chicago yesterday in the interests of the American fishery union suggesting efforts to organize or support the union among local fishermen and stakeholders.
James ki Jordan a 26 year old unmarried dry goods peddler disappeared from his Crescent place home in late November. A. F. Jordan of Attleboro visited the city seeking word of his brother and merchants involved reported no leads. City Marshal Wheeler advised and locals fear foul play. Also notes rising club prices, a Commercial Club officers ballot, and a new hall dedicated in Campelia. Contributions toward the Howard Centennial Institute at Bridgewater include 2000 from Mrs. Julia A. Drury and 700 from Mrs. Sarah H. Ames with gifts of portraits to trustees.
A banquet on January 26 at the Revere House celebrates hotel improvements. Mayor O'Brien presides with guests including Governor Robinson, Lieutenant-Governor Ames, ex-Governor Rice, collectors and local dignitaries. John C. Wyman will speak. the committee includes Wilder, Harris, Meer, Paige, and others.
