The Hamburg America liner was within a day’s sail of Boston when its machinery failed and it was towed to quarantine by the Rhaetia. Passengers all landed in good health and the Hamburg American Company is expected to claim about £100,000 in salvage.
Cunard steamer Pavonia under Captain McKay, from Liverpool, arrived disabled off Boston at 1 44 a m in tow of the Rhaetia with 300 passengers aboard. The Rhaetia towed Pavonia to quarantine then to East Boston dock. Salvage details place Pavonia cargo value at 250000 and ship value between 250000 and 800000 with salvage claims around 100600 disputed by Cunard.

Nasaville Tenn January 19 nearly 2000 miners gathered on hillsides around the Coal Creek stockade engaging in frequent gunfire with 200 State troops in two black houses. New York January 19. Ex President Rutherford B Hayes said to have a nephew William B Hayes a lawyer arrested on Loie Fuller accusation that he married her while another wife lived. Fuller produced a marriage agreement in Jefferson Market court. Hayes denied fault saying open marriage would hurt his business. he spent about 40000 dollars on the actress. He appeared in Jefferson Market Police Court and was paroled by Justice Grads.
New York January 19 William Rockefeller president Standard Oil and his wife are ill with blood poisoning at their home. His condition is serious and doctors performed two operations removing poisoned tissue after a nail puncture in a new shoe caused the infection. Mrs Rockefeller is convalescing after early treatment of a cut finger linked to the illness.
Secretary Blaine attended the cabinet session with Mrs Blaine against her wishes and spoke with Chilean minister Montt before an illness halted further discussion. He received care at Dr Hyatt’s office and was reported improved by nightfall. Although rumors circulated, he was said to be entirely well later.
Punaperrar Pennsylvania January 19. As predicted by last night's primaries the Cleveland Patis on forces carried the day at the Democratic city convention today. All ten national delegates from this city go instructed for the ex President and Governor. The anti administration or Hill forces bolted the convention.
Warren Springer, a leading Chicago manufacturer, was held criminally responsible by a coroner's jury for the deaths of five of his workers in a boiler explosion a week earlier. An arrest warrant was issued.
A telephone message reports a Missouri Pacific train collided with a sleighing party of twenty one at Bogle and Sarah avenues in St Louis killing seven or eight. Details are not yet available.

Braprorp Pennsylvania January 19 The Lime stone tannery the largest plant of its kind in the world located at Limestone New York ten miles from here is on fire. Assistance has been telegraphed to Bradford.

Last night Alderman Beattie proposed city orders that dominated local discussion for twenty four hours. The trial of Nurse Herbert Searvant in Kings County Court of Sessions ended with a Brooklyn jury returning a guilty verdict on first degree assault for shooting Mrs. Cora Chapman on November 23 in her bedroom. Judge Moor presided as the jury deliberated after 1 p.m.
A blaze of probable incendiary origin broke out along the row of buildings over the old waterway on Canal Street between Smith and Crossing streets in Providence. By the time crews contained the flames, about $30,000 worth of property had been destroyed.
A reporter visited City Hall to ask Alderman Keenan about a Post story. He acknowledged noticing the piece but said he had nothing to say. He warned that further references could lead to court action.
Arthur Barker aged about 30 attempted to kill himself and his wife Addie Barker at 79 Camden Street last night around 9 30 pm. He stabbed himself in the breast then slashed his wife in the arm. Mrs Barker tended him until police and Dr Cushing arrived. Barker was taken to City Hospital in critical condition.
