The city endured a historic cold wave with midnight readings at two above zero and every hourly measure, including dawn and noon, lower than the previous. By nightfall the drop accelerated and after six o’clock temperatures fell again.
After a day of snow sleet and rain a deep cold snap swept the region. Hardwick Vermont logged 30 below at midnight while Waterville Maine reported 18 below and Halifax 10 below. Other towns from St John to Providence showed subzero to single digits as residents hunkered down.
Alderman James M. Curley moved to appoint committees of the Board of Aldermen despite opposition. He cited Section 11 Chapter 4 of the Acts of 1898, claiming it protects the public from injuries from a board deadlock. The deadlock over electing a chairman remained unbroken, making the meeting highly exciting and potentially headed to court.
After adjournment Alderman Curley argued Chapter 557 of the 1898 Acts limits the acting chairman of the Board of Aldermen to prevent deadlock and to facilitate city business. He said rulings supported by state law govern committee appointments and that only the Supreme Court can decide the chair’s powers. Four Republicans later sought a legal ruling from Corporation Counsel Babson on the committees' legality.
President Roosevelt, praised by Bishop Cranston as the square deal apostle, told an African diamond jubilee audience at Memorial M. E. Church that he aims to extend the concept beyond the United States. He said he would protect citizens while seeking a fair deal with Japan, and would not speak at a Methodist gathering without this goal.
The President claims a U S Japan accord solves issues and asserts no sentimentalism as he praises Methodists for inspiration. He notes this will be his last public address in the city and recalls close ties with church leaders Bishop Hartzell and Bishop Cranston.

Burglars broke into the State Bank at Carrier Oklahoma early today wrecked the safe and escaped with 3900 dollars. The raid occurred 18 miles northwest of Enid. Police searched for suspects and secured the scene.
Washington Jan 18 The Interior Secretary Garfield was informed by field agents of alleged wholesale frauds in public lands. The charge claims about 110 million dollars worth of lands west of the Mississippi have been fraudulently acquired in the past two years by corporations and individuals.
Secretary Garfield sent letters to Senate Chairmen Hale and Tawney requesting an additional 500000, aiming for a total of 1,000,000 to prevent depredations on public timber and lands. He cites 32000+ cases, with statewide totals across many Western states, and notes increased field-service demand after transfers from Justice and the Secret Service.

Miss Marion D. Dean of Chicago and New York found a husband instead when no chaperon could be found. She became Mrs. Walter A. Hughes last Saturday evening in a sudden ceremony witnessed by a small theatre party.
Mrs. Hughes 23 and her twin sister Evelyn, social fixtures in Chicago and major East Coast locales, marry Mr. Hughes 30 after he proposed acting as husband and protector. The ceremony took place at St Matthew's Church with Rev Arthur Judge officiating amid a party of 12 guests.
A nameless agent visited Gloucester seeking a summer residence for President elect William H. Taft. He inspected the Eastern Point estate once owned by Henry C. Rouse and the Linguard estate at Annisquam. Dealers doubt leasing either estate is feasible this season.

In a heated House exchange, Mr Willett's half delivered speech attacking President Roosevelt drew strong Republican opposition and a 126 to 78 vote to lose the floor. Gardner of Massachusetts secured a point of order and Willett was silenced amid cross party wrangling.
Portland Maine January 18 A small motor boat carrying Rev Mr Bryant of Candys Harbor and his three aboard was driven from King Island shores after hours adrift in a gale. The craft was smashed and the family barely escaped death by scrambling up the rocky ledges.
A minister and his family endured a harrowing night on King Island after a motor boat breakdown in the bay. The preacher sustained deep lacerations and frostbitten fingers while all three children, left without food or fire, sheltered under a ledge and later in a hut as rescuers located them.
P. J. Kieran, missing president of Fidelity Funding Company, reappeared in Pittsburg to post bail on two Catholic institution related charges and then vanished again. He said he would return to New York to face the charges and turn over his assets to the receiver. A simultaneous bankruptcy petition was filed by Holy Name Catholic Church of Donora, naming Carnegie Trust Company and Charles H. Wamill as creditors.
